tasteboulder.com: where the crack is, who to sell to, what to charge

Live Google SERP, keyword and backlink data for the Boulder restaurant and catering market, pulled 2026-07-28 from DataForSEO, plus the site's own crawl of 769 Boulder food and drink venues. Total data spend for this run: $0.34.

The headline. The 134 referring domains everyone keeps quoting is the barrier for one keyword, and it's the wrong keyword to chase first. On the category terms (italian, sushi, breakfast, private dining, catering) the page-one barrier collapses to somewhere between 2 and 30 referring domains, and the number of links pointing at the actual ranking page is usually zero. That's the crack. The plan is to concede the head term for a year and take the categories.

1. Demand: what people actually search

Google Ads search volume and CPC, location set to Boulder, Colorado, pulled 2026-07-28.

A data conflict I'm not papering over. The earlier run recorded "restaurants boulder" at 27,100 a month. This pull, with the location pinned to Boulder city, returns 6,600. The likeliest explanation is a wider location scope in the first pull (Colorado or national) versus Boulder city here, but I did not re-run the original to confirm it, so treat the cause as unverified. Plan against 6,600, because that's the figure measured for the market she is actually selling into. If a slot is ever priced off a traffic promise, price it off 6,600, not 27,100.

2. Who actually ranks, and what that reveals

Eight live SERPs, Boulder Colorado, desktop, 2026-07-28. Entity type in brackets.

best restaurants boulder

Blonde Atlas (travel blog), Boulder tourism board, Reddit, SALT (restaurant), The Sink (restaurant), The Adventurist Magazine (travel blog), River and Woods (restaurant), Time Out (national publisher), Postino (restaurant chain), Downtown Boulder (directory). Still no dedicated Boulder restaurant guide. Map pack: Postino, Cozobi Fonda Fina, Odd Rabbit.

The finding that changes the plan

boulderdowntown.com is the real incumbent, and it only covers downtown. It ranks number one for "private dining boulder co", number one for "boulder restaurants open now", and number six for "sushi boulder" with a page about a restaurant that does not rank for itself. It is the Downtown Boulder Partnership: members only, downtown only. TasteBoulder has 769 venues across the whole city. That is the structural gap, and it is bigger than any content gap.

The rest of the SERPs, in one line each

  • italian restaurant boulder: six independent restaurant sites hold page one. Restaurants can and do rank here.
  • sushi boulder: a chain at one, TripAdvisor, four independents, Downtown Boulder, Reddit, Yelp. Two of the ranking independents have almost no links at all.
  • breakfast boulder co: mostly restaurant sites, plus one tiny local guide page at position seven. See section 4.
  • private dining boulder co: Downtown Boulder at one, then restaurants and Chautauqua. This is the only SERP in the set with an AI Overview.
  • catering boulder co: a restaurant catering page, a brewery, a nonprofit, Yelp, three dedicated caterers, ezCater, Reddit, the tourism board. Directories already hold slots here.
  • wedding catering boulder co: three caterers, The Knot, WeddingWire, Yelp, Facebook, Reddit. Heavily directory-shaped.
  • boulder restaurants open now: Downtown Boulder twice, Yelp, TripAdvisor, OpenTable, restaurants. Weak, dated, and beatable.

3. The authority gap, and the two floors that matter

Correction to the starting position. tasteboulder.com does have 12 referring domains. All 12 are nofollow. The dofollow count is zero. The site is starting from nothing, not from twelve, and every plan below assumes that. (outdoorboulder.com, the sibling, has zero referring domains of any kind.)

Referring domains are a crude proxy for authority and I'm treating them as one. What follows is unique referring domains, with the nofollow share subtracted, from DataForSEO on 2026-07-28. Two floors, because they answer different questions. The domain floor is the lowest root-domain count among page-one local operators. The page floor is the lowest count of domains linking to the exact ranking URL.

Keyword Weakest page-one local site Its domain links (dofollow) Page floor (dofollow) What that means
best restaurants bouldersaltboulder.com134 (94)0The famous 134. Hardest term in the set
italian restaurant bouldermorsoboulder.com17 (6)1Ranks ninth on six real links
sushi bouldertemakijoint.com2 (2)0Ranks tenth on two links, total

boulder restaurants open nowboulderdowntown.com2,449 (1,982)0Page floor is zero across the board
Read the two columns together. Nobody is winning these SERPs with links to the ranking page, because there mostly aren't any. On "best restaurants boulder" the number-one result (a travel blog) has zero domains pointing at the page that ranks. So do Reddit and The Adventurist. Rankings here are decided by whole-site trust and by what's on the page. That is good news for a new site with good content and bad news for anyone hoping to shortcut it with a few links.

4. Is the crack open?

The AI citation angle was tested in the earlier run and came back closed.

Seven query variants were tested and an AI Overview appeared on exactly one. This run added an eighth SERP set and found an AI Overview on one more ("private dining boulder co"). That does not change the verdict. Per the skill's own gate, do not build this plan on AI citation. Nothing below depends on it.

The angle that is open is specificity plus freshness, and here is the single best piece of evidence for it:

therustyskilletranch.com ranks seventh for "breakfast boulder co" with a page titled "Best Breakfast Boulder Colorado: Local Guide 2026". It has 30 referring domains to the whole site and zero to the page that ranks. A tiny site with a dated local guide page is beating most of Boulder's breakfast restaurants at their own term. That is exactly the page TasteBoulder should be building, twelve times over, one per category.
And the uncomfortable half of that finding. I pulled the actual list of those 30 domains. They are a press release syndication blast: radio station and newswire mirror sites (kotaradio.com, q923radio.com, newsnetmedia.com, xpr.media and two dozen more), every one with an identical 15-backlink footprint and every one scored rank 0 by DataForSEO. Nobody earned those links. I am reporting this because it is what the data says, not as a recommendation. A syndication footprint is trivially devalued whenever Google decides to, and it would put a site she wants to sell sponsorships on into a category she cannot defend to a prospect. The real lesson is narrower and more useful: Google is barely gating these queries on link quality, so content and structure are doing the work.

5. The moves, in priority order

Ranked by durability and by independence from any assumption about AI.

  1. Build twelve category guide pages, not one homepage. Best sushi, best breakfast, best italian, best mexican, best vietnamese, best pizza, happy hour, brunch, private dining, late night, patios, catering. The page floors on these are zero and the domain floors run 2 to 30. Each page gets a visible pull date, a real ranked list built from the 769-venue dataset, and prices from the 1,806 menus already crawled. Nobody else on page one has menu prices.
  2. Attack the "open now" and "near me" shape directly. "restaurants near me" is 74,000 a month in Boulder. It's a map pack fight she cannot win as a directory, but "boulder restaurants open now" has a page floor of zero and the incumbent is a members-only downtown site. Hours data is already in the dataset. A genuinely live open-now page is a durable edge because no national content team will maintain it.
  3. Beat Downtown Boulder on coverage. They rank for private dining and open-now with thin pages, and they exclude every restaurant outside downtown. Publish the whole-city version of each page they rank for. This is the clearest head-to-head win available and it does not need a single new link.
  4. Ship the catering page early, because the click is worth 13 to 33 times a restaurant click. Detail in section 7.
  5. Structured data on every venue page. 574 of 769 Boulder venues are missing Restaurant schema on their own sites. If TasteBoulder marks up every one properly it becomes the best-structured Boulder food dataset on the web, which is also the sales pitch for branch two.
  6. Owned network cross-linking, with honest expectations. OutdoorBoulder and the hub. This is worth two or three links of near-zero value today because OutdoorBoulder itself has no links. Do it because it's free, not because it moves anything.

6. Prospects: the 15 Boulder restaurants worth selling SEO to

From the site's own crawl of 769 venues and 690 restaurant websites, cross-checked against live SERP positions and referring-domain counts pulled 2026-07-28. Review counts and ratings are Google's. Chains and franchises are excluded on purpose, because the SEO decision is almost never made in Boulder.

15Sherpa Kitchen8884.7n/a No website of their own. Their listed site is a free Google Sites page Same story: 888 reviews at 4.7 and no domain to attach any of it to. Biggest need

Where the linking-domain column says n/a, the business has no domain of its own to measure, or its listed domain belongs to a platform rather than to them. Le French Café (700 reviews at 4.7) belongs in that same group.

Runners up, in order

Doug's Diner (964 reviews, seven checks failing), Chez Thuy (1,187), Wild Pastures Burger Company (911), Mile High Pho (755), The Laughing Goat (1,580), Cosmo's Pizza (1,376, and 349 of its 482 linking domains are nofollow), Axe Whooping (1,170 reviews at a perfect 5.0, and a natural private-events buyer), Oak at Fourteenth and Bramble & Hare (both top of the map pack for private dining, both absent from page one organic, both high-ticket).

Deliberately excluded

Burger King, Safeway, Whole Foods, Barnes & Noble, BJ's, Smashburger, Domino's, Panera, QDOBA, Crumbl, Potbelly, Cold Stone, Native Foods, Wahoo's, Snarf's Sandwiches and the two Regency Centers shopping malls, because the marketing decision is made outside Boulder. Avery Brewing, because with 2,350 referring domains they already have an agency. BDT Stage, because their domain is literally bdtfinalseason.com. The Yellow Deli scores highly on the gap metrics but is run by a religious community with a contested public record, so it should be a deliberate decision rather than a cold call.

Who to call first, and why

Call II Pastaio Ristorante first. They are already third in the map pack for "italian restaurant boulder", so their local marketing demonstrably works, and the restaurant beating them to page one has six real links against their sixty-seven. That is a diagnosis that fits in one sentence, is provable inside a quarter, and does not require her to promise a link campaign. Call Sushi Zanmai second, because showing an owner that a downtown directory outranks their own website for their own restaurant is the most persuasive thirty seconds in this entire document.

7. Money: all three branches

Branch A. Featured and sponsored slots on the directory

Price against what a click actually costs a Boulder restaurant elsewhere. Google's own numbers say a Boulder restaurant click sells for $0.52 to $1.62 and a Boulder catering click sells for $3.70 to $25.51, with top-of-page bids reaching $29.74. That ratio, roughly 13 to 33 times, is the whole reason catering gets its own price.

TierPriceWhat they getBreak-even for them
Founding slot$79 / moFeatured placement on one category page. First 12 only, cancel any time, no traffic promise, locked for 12 months49 to 152 clicks a month at Google's rates
Standard featured slot$149 / moSame, sold once the site clears 3,000 sessions a month92 to 287 clicks a month
Category sponsor$299 / moExclusive top slot on one category page, one per category, 12 available185 to 575 clicks a month
Catering slot$199 / moOne of only 3 slots on the catering page8 to 54 clicks a month
The number I'd actually lead with is $79, and the reasoning is not the maths. At $79 a month a general manager can say yes without asking an owner, which is the single biggest determinant of whether a local ad slot sells. It is also honest: the site has zero traffic today, and charging $149 for a promise would burn relationships she needs 769 of. Sell 12 founding slots at $79 with a published monthly traffic report, then raise to $149 when the report justifies it. Every number here is an estimate built on Google's CPC data, not on observed conversions, and it should be labeled that way to any prospect.

Branch B. SEO services sold to Boulder restaurants

The 15 names in section 6 are the pipeline. The pitch writes itself from data she already owns: across 690 crawled Boulder restaurant websites, 574 are missing Restaurant schema, 494 have no online booking, 429 have no way to capture an email address, 324 have no structured data at all, 231 have no menu on their own site, 183 have no meta description, and 79 have no website whatsoever. Suggested shape, and these are estimates to test, not established rates: a $450 one-time technical fix (schema, meta, sitemap, menu markup) as the door opener, then $750 a month for ongoing local SEO. The one-time fix is deliberately cheap because it is provable in weeks and it converts a cold restaurant into a client.

Branch C. Catering advertising

The page. One page, /boulder-catering, not four thin ones. Total Boulder catering demand measured across every variant is roughly 240 to 290 searches a month, which does not support a four-page silo. Build one strong page with sections for wedding, corporate, office lunch, BBQ and private chef, and a real filterable list of caterers pulled from the dataset.

Why it can rank. On "catering boulder co", the number-one result has 6 domains linking to it, number two has 1, and positions 4 and 7 (Yelp and ezCater) have zero. Two directories already hold page-one slots, which proves Google is happy to rank a directory for this term. A nonprofit's page sits at number three. The page floor is effectively 1.

The keywords, in priority order: catering boulder / catering boulder co / boulder catering / caterers in boulder colorado (140 a month grouped, $10.76 CPC), then catering and catering near me localized to Boulder (90 combined, but with top-of-page bids of $27.15 and $29.74), then private chef boulder (40, $4.17), lunch catering boulder (10, $9.16), bbq catering boulder (10, $4.27), wedding catering boulder, corporate catering boulder, boulder wedding caterers.

Who to approach, in order of likelihood of a yes:

  1. Angies Secret Garden. Third in the catering map pack at 4.9 across 63 reviews, and completely absent from page one organic. Smallest, hungriest, most obvious yes.
  2. Three Leaf Catering. Ranks sixth organically and is not in the map pack. Their content works and their Google Business Profile does not, which is the single best diagnosis in this business.
  3. Dish Gourmet. Listed in the dataset under the caterer category with 229 reviews at 4.7, and invisible on both the SERP and the map pack. Cheapest yes on the board.
  4. Sugar Pine Catering. Ranks eighth for wedding catering only and is missing from the head catering term entirely.
  5. A Spice of Life Catering (map pack two, 4.8 across 285 reviews, ranks eighth) and Savory Catering Company (map pack one, 4.9 across 196, ranks fifth). Both are already winning, so they buy for defense rather than discovery. Ask them for the annual, not the monthly.
  6. Restaurant catering arms with big review bases and no catering visibility: Pasta Jay's (2,268 reviews), Misaki @ Superior (1,659 at 4.8), RASOI HOUSE by Spice Room (1,636 at 4.9), Kathmandu Restaurant II (1,302), Boulder Pho (1,099), McDevitt Taco Supply (778), KT's BBQ (220, and "bbq catering boulder" is sitting there unclaimed at $4.27 a click). These are the volume play: they already do catering and none of them show up for it.
The honest caveat on catering. The skill says to lead the advertiser case with proof of existing ad spend. I could not get that proof. No paid results appeared on any of the catering SERPs in this pull, so the $10.76 to $25.51 CPC figures are Google's bid estimates rather than observed live ads. High bid estimates with no visible advertisers can mean a market that spends in bursts, or one that has given up on search. Before quoting $199 a month to a caterer, watch those SERPs for actual ads for two or three weeks. That is a cheap check and it changes the pitch entirely.

8. The next 30 days

  1. Week one. Ship three category guide pages (sushi, breakfast, italian), each with a visible pull date, real menu prices from the crawled menus, and full Restaurant and ItemList schema. These are the three terms with measured page floors of 0 to 1.
  2. Week one. Ship /boulder-catering. Highest value per click in the whole keyword set and the page floor is effectively 1.
  3. Week two. Ship the open-now page and the whole-city private dining page, both aimed straight at Downtown Boulder's two weakest number-one rankings.
  4. Week two. Start watching the catering SERPs for live paid ads. Decide the catering price on what shows up.
  5. Week three. Approach the first five SEO prospects: II Pastaio, Sushi Zanmai, Phở Kitchen, next door KITCHEN & BAR, Dark Horse. One page each showing their own diagnosis, no competitor data.
  6. Week three. Launch the featured-listing badge for every venue on the site, with the embed code. This is the only link source available at volume.
  7. Week four. Approach Angies Secret Garden, Three Leaf and Dish Gourmet for catering slots at the founding rate.
  8. Months two to six, not weeks. Links. Everything in section 9.

9. The link path from zero, honestly

This is the question the whole plan turns on, so here is the unpadded version.

The 134 target is a red herring, for three measured reasons.

  1. Most of the 134 is lint. I pulled the actual list. The nameable, real ones are about a dozen: colorado.com, wanderlog.com, uncovercolorado.com, diningout.com, elevationoutdoors.com, bestofmilehigh.com, denverinsider.org, navigatingdenver.com, marriott.com. The rest are scrapers and foreign junk domains that nobody built and nobody could rebuild on purpose. That site has been a Boulder restaurant for over a decade and the links accumulated.
  2. Page-level links barely exist anywhere on these SERPs. Measured page floor is 0 on six of the seven keywords tested.
  3. The domain floor collapses off the head term. 2 for sushi, 17 for italian, 30 for breakfast.
So the real target is 25 to 40 dofollow referring domains, not 134, and the head term gets conceded for year one. That is achievable. 134 in ninety days is not, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something.

Where those 25 to 40 realistically come from, in order of likelihood:

SourceRealistic yieldHonest assessment
The 769 businesses themselves, via a free "featured on TasteBoulder" badge20 to 35 The biggest lever and the only one that works at volume. 690 crawled sites, and restaurants link out readily to anyone who praises them. Caveat she should hear: these are same-city, same-topic links of modest value, and a share will be nofollow. They are also exactly the kind of link the page-one competitors actually have.
Colorado and regional guides that already link to Boulder restaurants3 to 5 colorado.com, uncovercolorado.com, bestofmilehigh.com, denverinsider.org, navigatingdenver.com, elevationoutdoors.com, diningout.com, cityandlocal.com, foodyas.com, wanderlog.com, airial.travel. Every one of these already links to a Boulder restaurant or a Boulder food blog, so they demonstrably accept this content. Expect maybe a third to say yes.
Boulder institutions: the tourism board, the Chamber, Daily Camera, Boulder Weekly, CU Boulder, the library1 to 3 Earned, not asked for, and only with something genuinely citable. The 769-venue, 1,806-menu, 39,345-review dataset is the only asset here a journalist would actually use. A Boulder restaurant closures and openings tracker, or a dated menu price index, is the realistic hook. Slow, and worth more than the other forty combined.
The owned network (OutdoorBoulder, the hub)2 to 3 Free, hers, and currently worth close to nothing because OutdoorBoulder has zero referring domains of its own. Do it anyway. Do not count on it.
Press release syndication30+ Observed working on a competitor. Not recommended. It is trivially devalued and it is not a footprint she wants on a site she is about to sell sponsorships from.

The honest timeline: 8 to 15 dofollow domains by day 90 (owned network, the first regional guides, early badge take-up), 25 to 40 by month twelve. That is enough to compete for "sushi boulder", "italian restaurant boulder", "breakfast boulder co", "boulder restaurants open now" and "private dining boulder co". It is not enough for "best restaurants boulder", and pretending otherwise would be the fastest way to waste a year.

10. What would prove this plan wrong

What has to be true: that category-term page-one floors stay low; that the site can earn 25 to 40 dofollow domains in a year; that Boulder restaurants will pay $79 to $149 a month for a slot; and that catering demand of roughly 250 a month holds.

What would prove it wrong inside 90 days: fewer than 5 signed founding slots after 40 direct approaches, or zero top-20 positions on any category term after six months of publishing.

The number to watch, the source, and the cadence. Pull the root-domain referring-domain count of the weakest page-one local operator for "italian restaurant boulder", "sushi boulder" and "breakfast boulder co", monthly, on the first Monday, using DataForSEO backlinks/bulk_referring_domains. On 2026-07-28 those three numbers are 17, 2 and 30. If the lowest of the three rises above 100 for two consecutive months, the category crack has closed and the directory should be demoted to a lead source for the SEO services business rather than a traffic property.

Second number: tasteboulder.com's own dofollow referring domains, today zero. If it is not at 10 or more by day 90, the link plan is failing and the badge program is the specific thing to fix, because it is the only source with volume.

Sources: DataForSEO Google SERP (organic live advanced), Google Ads search volume, and backlinks bulk referring domains plus referring domains, all pulled 2026-07-28, location Boulder Colorado, desktop, English. Business, review, website and menu data from tasteboulder.com's own crawl (769 venues, 690 websites, 1,806 menus, 39,345 reviews). Referring-domain counts are a crude authority proxy and are treated as one throughout. Search volume figures are Google's estimates and vary with location scope, as the 6,600 against 27,100 conflict in section 1 shows. Pricing figures are estimates derived from CPC data, not from observed conversions. Total DataForSEO spend for this analysis: $0.34.
