AI-Whitespace Test: Boulder vs Denver, 3 Verticals

Created: 2026-05-31

Purpose: Real, current evidence of how thin or consolidated AI-search answers are in SEO Believer's target markets, to judge whether GEO is a winnable opening per vertical and city.

Method note: AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) were not queried directly. This approximates their citation behavior by analyzing the page-1 sources they draw from for local "best X" queries: listicles/roundups, review platforms and directories, and the businesses' own sites. Run via WebSearch on 2026-05-31. Treat as a strong proxy, not a direct read of AI output.

> UPGRADE DONE (2026-06-01) , AND IT CHANGED THE FINDING. Read ai-whitespace-DIRECT-test-2026-06-01.md. A direct test of Perplexity + Claude + Grok (+ a ChatGPT sample via DataForSEO llm_responses; AI Overviews + Gemini still TODO) CONTRADICTS the "wide-open vacuum" framing below. The named candidates are NOT invisible to AI: RESTOR is named by Perplexity/Claude/Grok; on high-intent dentistry queries Grok names Boulder Restorative Dentistry, Dr. Ania, Alber; Perplexity names Boulder Canyon + Alber on veneers. The proxy (Google-SERP-only) structurally could not see this.

>

> Revised opening: NOT a virgin vacuum. The real play is "move a client from named-by-ONE engine to named-by-ALL, and own the structured-data layer." Highest-probability single win: a dated, schema-rich Boulder implant-cost page (all engines currently anchor implant cost to ONE source, Boulder Dental Center's "$3,150 start to finish"). Claude = proof not target for med spas (already names RESTOR favorably, never refuses). Grok pulls Reddit/X (net-new citation path). The verdicts in the table below are the PROXY read and are now superseded by the direct test for dentistry + med spas.

Verdict at a glance

VerticalBoulderDenverCase-study priority
Cosmetic / implant dentistryWide open (citation vacuum, no editorial authority, no cost authority)Cosmetic open; implant-cost queries captured by diccolorado.comLead with Boulder
Med spas / aestheticsWide open (aggregator-dominated, fragmented, no entrenched names)Winnable but heavier (more competitors, La Fontaine semi-default)Lead with Boulder
Personal injury lawHard (directory + 40-yr-firm saturation)Effectively closed (national-budget advertisers)Skip / opportunistic only

Bottom line: Boulder's AI-citation ground is genuinely empty in two of the three high-value verticals tested. Personal injury law is saturated in both cities and is a poor case-study bet. The test confirms the GEO opening is real and winnable, but vertical-specific: it's a content-and-citation vacuum in dentistry and med spas, not a blanket opportunity.

Med Spas / Aesthetics

Boulder

  • Listicles: Page 1 dominated by programmatic aggregator listicles (Medical Spa Locator "128 Best Med Spas in Boulder 2026," MedSpa Scout, Yelp "Top 10" variants). No authoritative editorial roundup (5280, Daily Camera, Denver Post) ranks for Boulder med spas.
  • Consolidation: Moderately fragmented. Recurring: Mōv Aesthetics, Leah Nickie, Evolution Dermatology, The Luxe Room, Skin Collective. Set shifts by source. No 3-5 name lock.
  • Review platforms: Dominant. Yelp, Medical Spa Locator, MedSpa Scout, Birdeye, TrustAnalytica outrank most business sites.
  • Whitespace candidates: RESTŌR Medical Spa (Boulder + Denver, founded 2011, 5 stars / 112+ Google reviews) is strong yet absent from named-business listicles. Also Boulder Aesthetics & Intimate Wellness, The Firm.
  • Winnability: Wide open. High GEO leverage.

Denver

  • Listicles: Same aggregator pattern at larger scale (Yelp, TrustAnalytica, ThreeBestRated, Buoy). Slightly more editorial signal (5280 names individual injectors) but no clean "best med spas" ranking.
  • Consolidation: Fragmented and larger. La Fontaine Aesthetics (Dr. Oleszek) closest to an entrenched default.
  • Whitespace candidates: RESTŌR again under-listed (Central Park Denver, 96 Yelp reviews); Original Glam, 5280 Vitality.
  • Winnability: Open but more crowded. Moderate GEO difficulty. Second priority.

Cosmetic / Implant Dentistry

Boulder

  • Listicles: Thin and weak. Page 1 is mostly practice-owned sites, not editorial roundups. Only weak ones (a low-authority "here.you" listicle, Opencare). A citation vacuum.
  • Consolidation: Moderately fragmented. Recurring: Boulder Canyon Dental, Alber Dental Studio (575+ 5-star reviews), Boulder Smiles, Incredible Smiles, Dr. Ania, Boulder Restorative Dentistry. Implants skew to specialists (Boulder Implants & Periodontics / Dr. Boynton, Boulder Periodontics, Boulder Oral Surgery). No single practice owns the vertical.
  • Review platforms: Yelp and RealSelf rank, but practice sites still outrank them on most queries (winnable on-site).
  • Cost query: "Average cost of dental implants Boulder" pulls practice blogs plus Denver/Colorado aggregators. No Boulder-specific cost authority exists. Clear content gap.
  • Whitespace candidates: Alber Dental Studio (huge review count, no roundup placement), Boulder Restorative Dentistry, Dr. Ania (30+ years), Boulder Canyon Dental. Strong sites, absent from any neutral "best of" AI would cite.
  • Winnability: Wide open. No entrenched listicle, no aggregator lock-up, no cost authority.

Denver

  • Listicles: More developed but commercial. diccolorado.com (Dental Implant Center of Colorado) runs multiple ranking/cost articles and dominates implant-cost SERPs. Vendor-adjacent, not independent media.
  • Consolidation: More consolidated on implants (Altura Periodontics, Advanced Dental Implant Center, Nuvia, Cherry Creek Oral Surgery). Cosmetic side fragmented (Smile Essentials, Cherry Creek Dental Spa, Almeida & Bell, Scott Greenhalgh).
  • Cost query: Dominated by diccolorado.com, denverdental.com, thedentalhealers.com price guide. Structured, dated, number-heavy pages, exactly what AI Overviews cite. Partly locked.
  • Whitespace candidates: Cosmetic side open (Smile Essentials, Almeida & Bell, Cherry Creek Dental Spa). Implant-cost intent harder to dislodge.
  • Winnability: Mixed. Cosmetic open; implant-cost partly entrenched by diccolorado.

Personal Injury Law

Boulder

  • Directories: Very high dominance. Super Lawyers, Justia, Expertise.com, FindLaw, Avvo, plus a Longmont Leader roundup occupy ~6-7 of the top 10. Exactly the sources AI leans on.
  • Consolidation: ~8-10 recurring firms (Purvis Thomson, Jurdem, Debbie Taussig, Ferrell, Springer & Steinberg, Harding, Daniels & Scriven, Sloat Nicholson & Hoover, Klein Frank), all gatekept by the same directories.
  • Informational query: "What to do after a car accident in Boulder" is owned by firm-authored blogs (Daniels & Scriven, Ferrell, Sloat, Manning) plus FindLaw. Firms already own the AI-feeding layer.
  • Whitespace: Thin. Klein Frank, Debbie Taussig lighter in directories; few strong-but-invisible firms.
  • Winnability: Hard, even in small-market Boulder.

Denver

  • Directories: Extreme. Super Lawyers, Justia, Expertise, Avvo, Martindale, Lawyers.com plus aggregators, plus heavy paid landing pages (fdazar.com "$2B+ Won," Fang "$500M recovered").
  • Consolidation: Highly consolidated (Bachus & Schanker, Dan Caplis, Ramos Law, Fang, Zaner, Fuicelli & Lee, Franklin D. Azar, Burg Simpson). One of the most ad-heavy legal markets in the US.
  • Informational query: Firms have thoroughly colonized it.
  • Whitespace: Near-zero at the top.
  • Winnability: Very hard. Among the most entrenched verticals.

PI law recommendation: Poor case-study bet versus med spas or dentistry. No directory thinness, no absent-but-credible operators. The honest pitch ("informational content + schema to win AI answer boxes") is achievable but slow. Pursue only opportunistically, with a single Boulder firm. Lead the program with med spas and dentistry.

What this means for the GEO bet

The earlier national data said: traditional local SEO still owns transactional volume, AI owns high-consideration research, and AI is small but growing fast. This local test sharpens it. In Boulder, for dentistry and med spas, the sources AI engines cite are either programmatic aggregators or thin/absent editorial, and several strong businesses are invisible to all of them. That's a cheap, fast, code-fixable opening (schema, structured content, a real roundup or cost guide, llms.txt). It's exactly the kind of win one operator with Claude Code can manufacture quickly, and it's on-brand for the GEO differentiator.

The honest boundary: this is a consideration-phase and differentiation play, not proof that AI drives more booked revenue than Maps today. Lead client case studies with the Maps/organic volume win (near-term ROI), and layer the AI-citation win (absent to cited) as the ahead-of-the-curve proof. PI law is out for now.
