How women describe anhedonia when nobody has given them the word
6,988 comments on three viral menopause videos. 82 describe anhedonia. Not one uses the term.
Four women, reaching for the same distinction
They have never met. Their comments sit at 3,890 likes and at zero, at the top of the thread and buried 4,000 deep where nobody scrolls. All four independently insist on the same thing: this is not sadness.
- 3,890likes
Not really depressed but everything feels flat
- 10likes
the feeling of nothing I'm not sad I'm not happy I just feel nothing
- 1likes
I'm not depressed and I don't feel the excitement and happiness that I once used to have
- 0likes
it is like a depression but not hard to explain
That is the piece. Anhedonia has a name, a literature, and a mechanism. These women are building the vocabulary from scratch because nobody handed it to them, and then apologizing for not being able to explain it.
The four ways it shows up
Every comment below is verbatim, without the username. Grouped by what the woman is actually describing, because these are different experiences that all get flattened into "low mood". buried means the comment sits past position 750 in a thread most people never scroll: nobody saw it, and it exists here only because we pulled the whole thread.
○ Flatness and numbness 26
Nothing registers. Not sad, not happy, just nothing. Emotional blunting

The absolute lack of enjoyment. Nothing excites me anymore. That ‘meh’ feeling. Not really depressed but everything feels flat. Except for the random rage now and then.

The emptiness. Like my soul has drifted to a place there’s no joy or light.
- 67
losing my spark. social anxiety. zero libido.
- 45
Lack of sleep, numb to everything, weight gain, always hungry, not wanting to be touched, word coming out that wasn’t even close to what you were thinking or going to say, shoulder pain, always wanting to be alone, no joy for what you once loved, just no feeling to anything, and always wondering what wrong with me, and not liking the mirror.

I felt this to my soul and you got me in tears. Tons of love and hugs and thank you for posting this. 45 is hitting hard, rage, feeling empty, not knowing who I am or how to be happy anymore. 2 kids off to college one being my baby girl and wow did that break me especially the day she moved out. 😭😭I feel my world is falling apart and I feel so not me or even here right now just empty and lost. I still have one at home my baby boy so he is holding me from totally falling to millions of pieces. Glad to know I'm not alone but hate anyone has to feel like this. I'm clueless how to get myself back or not to feel empty and sad all the time.

I am getting older I look in the mirror and don’t know who I am anymore , I don’t look the same , I don’t feel happiness anymore , I feel so alone and lost and my body’s changing , my looks , wrinkles , gaining weight, I don’t feel like me no more , I want to just give up and go to sleep , wish I could wake up in a happy mood . But the happiness in me is gone . My own happiness .
- buried
I'm never happy anymore. when I'm alone all I do is cry. this hit me so hard.
- buried
I'm 63 and went through this in my 30's and it took everything from me. My sex drive, my happiness, my love for my husband, depression, and just didn't care anymore.
- buried
I feel so alone and tired. I put on a happy face for my girls but I haven't been happy in a long time.
- 1
The emotional numbness.. I’m afraid to feel pure joy in things I used to. I miss it so much
- 1
For me, it’s that I want to be alone all the time and I don’t feel the excitement and happiness that I once used to have. I’m not depressed and I don’t feel depressed because there are things that bring me joy and there are things that I love to do. I’m just not the same person that I used to be and that so heartbreaking for me. My daughter is going to be a senior and I don’t want to feel meh or extreme sadness. I also, TMI, want to feel attractive enough to be intimate with my husband and those feelings just aren’t there. It’s not because I don’t love him and it’s not because I’m not attracted to him, they just aren’t there. The positive side is I am going next week to have my hormone levels tested and to get on the right path!
◓ Cannot want anything 22
Not tired. Just no drive to begin. Motivational anhedonia
- 289
No desire to do anything. Just want to be alone. The weight gain 😩
- 108

Anxiety, being emotional and not having motivation to do anything or never wanting to hangout with anyone anymore.
- 39
My words go missing, I’m itchy, I’m always exhausted, no motivation, no libido, no sleep, irritation on high, hot flashes, cold flashes, cluster migraines…it’s never ending.
- 38
I am 44 and in full menopause. Fatigue, headaches, brain fog, sore joints, thinning hair, short temper, overly emotional, no motivation. I feel overwhelmed and overstimulated all the time
- 18
Feeling overwhelmed by everything that’s not me I have no energy no ambition no motivation again that’s not me. I feel bloated and heavy. Heavy minded consumed by something but I don’t know what my body aches but for no medical reason and I just want to cry all the time
- 17
Perimenopause has kicked my ass! I'm nothing like I use to be. Brain fog, struggle to take in lots of information at once, so work is a nightmare! Zero motivation, never get excited or happy about anything anymore. This sucks, even on HRT.
- 11
No energy or motivation, and brain fog
- 11
I feel like I was is a washing machine for the past 20 years and now it spit me out..I dont know who I am, where I am, no plans, no motivation, ...I just want to rest. Evrything that was "important" to me, has lost its meaning.. I took the last 5 years to find out, who I am and what kind of person I want to be. When the "carefreeness of youth" fades, you become deeper and this makes life harder.. Im 50 and yet I do not have major physical symptoms, but the mental part is pain as well.
- 8

- buried
I'm thankful for estrogen and Lexapro. no energy, no motivation, hot flashes, itching, shoulders hurt then freezing cold. CALGON where are you to take me away!!!
- buried
I'm always tired and the energy to get all the things done is gone. Where did I go? How can I get the things done that need done? I keep pushing on an empty tank because there is no one else to do it. I'm a single mom with one left at home still to raise. It sucks!!! Work, house. yard, school, sports and advocating for my son because he is high functioning autistic. I'm so so tired!
- buried

The worst part for me is how much I self isolate. No one told me about menopause. I’m single and live alone. I have 5 beautiful grandbabies, who I disappoint often because I’m so tired, sore and just don’t want (can’t) to leave the house. I make plans with them because I truly want spend every waking moment with them. But sometimes I’m just so tired and in pain.
● The happy face 2
Performing the feeling she cannot find. Not a clinical subtype, but it kept appearing
- 0
This right here. I just wish they could understand I don't want to be this way but I can't do anything about it. I try to put on a happy face but most days I'm not happy I'm just tired
- buried
between menopause and getting diagnosed with lupus and RA and skin cancer deformities on my face I feel like i do not even know myself 😘I pretend to be happy around other's because truly does anyone care or want to be around you when u are not ok ? we all know this answer. in between clients I cry 😢alone in my car begging God to help me not feel so selfish 😔about wanting to just leave to feel peace . sometimes I think my family would be better off without me and my so called crazy
What is not anhedonia
The boundary is the article. 241 of the 323 candidates were rejected, and the rejections are as useful as the hits: most menopause writing blurs exactly these lines and ends up saying nothing.
'I lost myself' with no pleasure content
identity loss, and it is its own theme. She is describing who she is, not what she can feel.
'Too tired to do anything'
capacity, not pleasure. The anhedonia version is 'I did the thing and felt nothing'.
Crying, sadness, tearfulness
affect present, not pleasure absent. A woman weeping is feeling something.
'I can't stand anyone, I want to be alone'
withdrawal driven by irritability or sensory overwhelm. Different mechanism from lost interest in people.
'I want to travel, I want out of here'
wanting different things is the opposite of not wanting.
Before this publishes
This corpus contains women writing that they do not want to be here. A small number, but they are in there, and they are the readers most likely to find a piece about not being able to feel anything. Any published version needs a crisis resource at the bottom: in the US that is the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988. Not for cover. Because they are reading.
How this was built
- Corpus
- 6,988 comments of 12+ characters across @.gma80 (7,575 pulled), @husbands4menopause (top 650), @lila.perimenopaus.relief (top 650).
- Method
- Wide keyword net over pleasure, interest, motivation, flatness and withdrawal vocabulary, returning 323 candidates (4.6%). Every candidate then read and judged by hand against the boundary rules above. 82 kept.
- Why by hand
- The LLM pass failed at 37% when the OpenRouter account hit zero. Reading them directly turned out better anyway: one judge over the whole corpus instead of a machine on 63% of it and nothing on the rest.
- Rate
- 1.2% of the corpus. But 49 of the 82 come from Lila's 650 comments (7.5%) versus 30 from @.gma80's 4,425 (0.7%). Lila's video asks what your worst symptom is. Ask for symptoms, get symptoms.
- The buried majority
- 26 of the 30 hits on @.gma80 sit past position 750. 87% of the anhedonia language on that video was never seen by anyone. Seven comments in this set have zero likes.
- Known limit
- A keyword net misses anyone describing this without any of the expected vocabulary. The 82 is a floor, not a census. Judgement is one person's (Charlie's) and the boundary calls are arguable, which is why the rejects are published alongside.
