Google Business Profile Setup Steps
Eligibility Verdict, Read This First
Updated July 10, 2026, for the community-education pivot.
What changed
HouseHelperHub is no longer just a bulletin board. Its mission expanded (Tier 2, owner-approved) into a bilingual community-education organization that helps Spanish-speaking home-service workers become entrepreneurs, through bilingual workshops, 1:1 mentoring, and community meetups, alongside the free worker-and-homeowner listings. This is described at /comunidad.html.
What this does to the Google case
It genuinely strengthens it. "Community organization" is now an accurate, honest description of what HouseHelperHub is, not a stretch to dodge a category. A pure bulletin board reads to Google like a lead-generation or classifieds site (which its guidelines exclude by name); a real community organization that gathers people in person for education is exactly the kind of local entity a Business Profile is meant for.
What it does NOT change
Google's single most important requirement is genuine in-person contact with people, and phone, email, and video calls do not count. Source: Business eligibility and ownership guidelines. Right now the workshops, mentoring, and meetups are honestly described on the site as forming, first cohort, cupo limitado. No session has actually been held yet. Until one has, the in-person requirement is not met, no matter how the profile is worded.
The honest verdict moves from "borderline, leaning ineligible" to this: HouseHelperHub becomes cleanly eligible, and defensible, the moment you actually hold your first in-person workshop or meetup in the Boulder area and can show it happened. Not before. Claiming a profile before that first real session is the same over-reach that gets directory-style listings suspended, so the timing is the whole game.
The honest, defensible path
- Hold the first in-person session first. Then the community-organization category is true and provable. Everything else in this doc is ready to go the moment that box is checked.
- Category: "Community organization" (or the closest honest equivalent Google offers at setup), never "Employment agency," never "Housekeeping service." Both are classic suspension triggers.
- Do not represent HouseHelperHub as a service provider that cleans houses or employs workers. It connects and educates, it does not clean, place, verify, or pay anyone. That honesty is also what keeps the profile alive.
- Lower-risk things to do right now, before the first session, for real local visibility:
- Bing Places for Business, looser in-person requirements, worth setting up in parallel (ask for a companion pack).
- Local directories and community listings: Boulder Chamber, Nextdoor, Boulder County immigrant-services referral lists, local Spanish-language community boards. These fit a community organization perfectly and carry no suspension risk.
- Google Search Console (separate from GBP, already prepped in SEARCH-CONSOLE-STEPS.md), zero eligibility question, do it whenever.
- After the first session, proceed with the steps below as a genuinely defensible community-organization profile, not a calculated bet.
This verdict is research-based: it comes from Google's own current published eligibility policy, not a blog's interpretation.
Truthful-Evidence Checklist
Required before selecting the community category or submitting the profile:
- At least one workshop, mentoring session, or meetup has actually been held in person in the Boulder area.
- Date, location, and rough headcount of that first session are recorded somewhere (even a note in HEARTBEAT.md or DECISIONS.md is enough).
- Photos exist from the actual session (not stock or AI-generated), showing real attendance.
- An attendee list or sign-in record exists, even informal, that Annette could point to if Google asks for proof of in-person activity.
- The site's public copy (comunidad.html) has been updated to describe the session as something that happened, past tense, with true specifics, not "forming."
- Annette has reviewed and approved using this evidence for a GBP submission (Tier 2, this is a new live public surface).
Until every box above is checked, treat HouseHelperHub as still in the "borderline, leaning ineligible" bucket described in the verdict above, regardless of what comunidad.html says about future plans.
Recommended Category
Google Business Profile has roughly 4,000 categories and there is no clean "classifieds site" or "bulletin board" category. Candidates considered:
| Candidate category (verbatim GBP name) | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Community organization or Non-profit organization | Recommended if proceeding | Honest: HouseHelperHub genuinely functions as a free community resource for Spanish-speaking workers in Boulder. Lowest overclaim risk. Tradeoff: HouseHelperHub is not a registered non-profit, so "Non-profit organization" specifically should be avoided (it is a legal-status claim, not just descriptive); "Community organization" (or the closest live equivalent Google offers at setup time) is the safer of the two. |
| Employment agency | Reject | This is the single worst choice. It directly claims the Tier 3 employer-relationship role the project's own SOUL.md and CLAUDE.md explicitly forbid HouseHelperHub from having. Never select this. |
| Housekeeping service / House cleaning service | Reject | Overclaims that HouseHelperHub itself cleans houses. Also the classic pattern Google suspends when the profile owner is a directory, not the actual provider. |
| Website designer / Internet marketing service | Reject | Technically avoids overclaiming a physical service, but it misrepresents what the business actually does to searchers and to Google, which is its own violation. |
| Association or Social services organization | Backup option | Similar honesty profile to "Community organization." Use if "Community organization" is not offered as an exact match when Annette actually opens the category picker (Google's exact category list shifts, verify at setup time). |
Bottom line: whatever the exact live category name is at setup time, pick the one closest to "community organization / social services" and reject anything implying HouseHelperHub cleans houses, employs workers, or verifies workers. Annette's judgment call at the moment of picking from Google's live dropdown, since exact category names drift.
Ready-to-Paste Assets
Business name
Must match the site exactly (it already does, per the schema in the codebase). Do not add "Boulder" or "Housekeeping" to the GBP business name, Google penalizes keyword-stuffed names and it would also overclaim.
Business description, English (under 750 characters)
Character count: keep under 750. Trim the last sentence first if it runs long after any edits.
Business description, Spanish
Note: no em-dashes in either version, contractions used in English where natural, native phrasing in Spanish rather than a literal translation.
Services / attributes list
Do NOT list "housekeeping" as a GBP service, that field represents services HouseHelperHub itself performs. Instead, use the Attributes and "From the business" sections, which are safer:
- Identifies as: Women-owned (if Google offers this and it is true for Annette's ownership, her judgment call)
- Accessibility / amenities: not applicable, skip
- From the business, short bullet list to paste into "Services" only if GBP forces a services field (otherwise skip this section entirely):
- Free worker profile listings
- Free job postings for homeowners
- Bilingual site (Spanish and English)
- Community resource, not an employer or agency
If the GBP interface requires at least one "service" to publish, use "Community bulletin board listings" rather than anything implying HouseHelperHub performs housekeeping.
Starter posts (bilingual, 2-3 drafts)
Post, community and education (lead with this once the first session is real)
Note: only publish this once the first in-person session has actually happened, so "in-person workshops" is true in the past tense, not just planned.
Post 1, launch announcement
Post 2, for workers
Post 3, for homeowners
Photo Recommendations
GBP profiles perform better with real photos, but be careful what they imply:
- Cover photo: the HouseHelperHub logo or a clean hero graphic from the site, not a stock photo of someone cleaning (that would visually overclaim the service-provider role).
- Profile/logo photo: the site logo.
- "Team" or "About" photo: a real photo of Annette, if she is comfortable, this reinforces the founder-as-product trust moat described in CLAUDE.md. Optional, her call.
- Avoid: any stock or AI-generated photo showing a person cleaning a house under the HouseHelperHub name. That photo belongs on an individual worker's own listing page, not on the platform's own business profile.
- Recommended count: 3 to 5 photos is enough to start. Do not add more just to pad the profile.
Click Path: Create and Verify as a Service-Area Business
- Go to business.google.com signed in as [email protected].
- Click Manage now (or Add your business to Google if this is the first profile on this account).
- Enter the business name:
HouseHelperHub. If Google shows a list of possible existing matches, confirm none of them are this business, then continue with Add your business. - On the "Choose a business category" screen, search for the closest match to Community organization (see category table above for the honest ranking and fallback options). Do not pick anything implying housekeeping, cleaning, or employment.
- On "Do you want to add a location customers can visit, like a store or office?" click No. This is the step that makes HouseHelperHub a service-area business and hides the street address from public view. (Google still asks for a real address behind the scenes for verification purposes, a home address is fine, it is never shown publicly. Reference: Manage your business address.)
- On "Where do you provide service?" type each city individually and select from the dropdown. Use the metro list from SOUL.md: Boulder, Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette, Superior, Broomfield, Westminster, Arvada, Erie, Niwot. Google may cap the number of areas shown, prioritize Boulder, Longmont, Louisville, and Lafayette if it does.
- Add the phone number Annette wants public (if none, skip, a website-only contact is fine for a listing, though a phone number generally helps verification succeed).
- Add the website:
https://househelperhub.com. - On the description screen, paste the English description from above (GBP descriptions are English-only in the base profile; the Spanish description goes into GBP's separate Posts feature and into the site itself, not the core profile description field).
- Continue to the verification step. As of 2026, most service-area businesses without a public storefront are routed to video verification: a single continuous, unedited phone recording, 30 seconds to 5 minutes, no narration needed, showing evidence that a genuine operator is behind the account (for a home-based service-area business this usually means showing a piece of mail or documentation with the business name and address, not a storefront). Read Google's exact current instructions on-screen when you reach this step, they specify exactly what the video needs to show and the requirements do shift. Reference: Google Business Profile Verification in 2026.
- If Google instead offers postcard verification (by mail, 5 to 14 days) or phone verification (instant), either is fine and simpler than video, take whichever option Google actually presents.
- Submit for verification and wait. Do not publish any Posts or edit the profile heavily while verification is pending, that can occasionally re-trigger review.
After verification: add the extras
- Once verified, go to the Edit profile screen and confirm the address is still hidden (service-area businesses should show service area chips, not a street address, on the public profile).
- Add the 3 to 5 photos from the recommendations above.
- Add the description (English, from this doc).
- Go to Posts and publish the first starter post (English version). Publish the Spanish version as a separate post a day or two later, GBP posts do not support bilingual text in a single post cleanly.
- Turn on messaging only if Annette wants to personally field GBP messages, otherwise leave it off and let the site's contact flow do the work.
Done-When Checklist
- Category selected is the community/social-services option, not housekeeping or employment agency.
- Address is hidden, service area shows Boulder metro cities instead.
- Business name matches the site exactly: HouseHelperHub.
- Website field points to https://househelperhub.com.
- English description pasted, under 750 characters, no em-dashes, no overclaims.
- Profile shows Verified status (not "Pending" or "Suspended").
- At least one Post published.
- 3 to 5 photos uploaded, none implying HouseHelperHub itself cleans houses.
If It Gets Suspended
Given the eligibility verdict above, treat a suspension as a realistic possible outcome, not a surprise. If it happens: do not immediately resubmit with the same category and copy. Come back to this doc's eligibility section, reconsider the Bing Places or local-directory alternatives, and loop Annette in before trying an appeal (appeals are a Tier 2 decision, they involve representing the business to Google directly).
