The big idea (and why it fits you)

Start here

The video you saw is one move in a much bigger family of tactics. They all share one spine: deliver the value first, then ask for the business. Instead of "here's what I could do for you," you walk up holding "here's what I already did."

The seed example (find a local business with no website on Google Maps, build them one, send it cold) is the most literal version. But the same principle powers free Loom audits, AI-generated demo sites, free SEO and AI-visibility audits, and the classic "this could be your new website" mockup email. The 2025 to 2026 twist is that AI builders now let you do the "work" in minutes, so the play finally scales.

Why it fits you: you're a builder who can spin up a real, polished site on Astro and Cloudflare faster than most people can write a proposal. This whole genre rewards exactly that. The people winning at it aren't better salespeople, they're people who show instead of tell, and you can out-build them.

🃏

The 7 plays

What each is called + how it runs

1 Build the site first, then send it cold The seed

a.k.a. "build first, pitch later," the spec/demo site.

How it runs: Find a local business with no website (or an ugly one) on Google Maps. Build a real or demo site for them. Send it cold with a short note: here's what your business could look like. The finished thing does the persuading.

Tools: UglySiteScraper, Stevesie, Targetron, NotiQ to find them; Webflow, Framer, Astro, or an AI builder to build it.

2 Google Maps prospecting (the lead-source half)

a.k.a. reverse prospecting, the "Add Website" signal.

How it runs: Search a niche + city on Maps. The clearest buy signal is a listing with no website link (Google literally shows an "Add Website" button). Secondary signals: bad reviews, thin/old sites, missing fields. Score, then reach out personalized.

Tools: Stevesie scraper, Targetron, NotiQ, Origami, LeadsGorilla.

3 The free Loom / video audit

a.k.a. video audit, the screen-recording cold open.

How it runs: Record a 1 to 2 minute personalized walkthrough of their current site, naming 2 to 3 specific fixes. Two flavors: send it cold, or send a text first ("mind if I send you a quick video?") and only record for the people who say yes (the scalable "sniper" version).

Tools: Loom; Figma or Canva for a quick visual.

Best sources: Christian Bonnier, BEST Loom Outreach · Frankie Fihn, 1,000 clients with 5-min Looms (210K) · ListKit: the permission-first version

4 AI-generated demo site / instant redesign 2026 twist

a.k.a. the AI demo, the screenshot-to-site flip.

How it runs: Take 8 to 10 screenshots of their current site, drop them into an AI builder with a redesign prompt, wait a few minutes, then send a live link or a Loom of the new version. This is what makes "do it first" scale, the build is now nearly free.

Tools: Lovable, Bolt.new, v0, Replit, Base44.

Best sources: Darrel Wilson, Create & Sell AI Websites (261K) · Zac Frulloni, Sell Lovable Sites for $750 · Zac's full $750/day write-up

5 The free SEO / AI-visibility audit

a.k.a. the audit hook, and the newest angle: AEO audits.

How it runs: Run a free SEO (or AI-visibility) audit on their site and send the report as the opening gift. The fresh, uncrowded version checks whether ChatGPT and Gemini recommend them vs. competitors (Answer Engine Optimization).

Tools: SEOptimer, AI Page Ready (white-label widget), LeadsGorilla branded reports.

Best sources: Caleb Ulku, 10 Local SEO Clients/mo (no cold calls) · My Web Audit, AEO audits for agencies · AI Page Ready widget

6 The mockup / "this could be your new website" email

a.k.a. the screenshot mockup, "show, don't tell."

How it runs: Skip the full build; send a single screenshot mockup of a redesigned hero or homepage. lemlist's exact subject line: "This could be your new website." The line that sells it: "Why waste your time telling you what I can do, when I can just show you?"

Tools: Figma, Canva; lemlist / QuickMail / Puzzle Inbox to send.

Best sources: lemlist mockup templates · Puzzle Inbox (reports a 4 to 6% reply rate) · r/agency debates it

7 The free-sample / puppy-dog close

a.k.a. the sales classic underneath all of the above.

How it runs: Let the prospect hold the finished thing. Once they've seen their own business looking great, giving it back (or saying no) costs more emotionally than saying yes. It's the pet-store trick: let the family take the puppy home for the weekend.

The catch: is this "spec work"?

Read before you scale it

There's a real, decades-old objection to doing work for free, and a 2024 movement against it. Worth knowing so you can position yourself on the right side of the line.

The crucial distinction: the design world's objection (AIGA, No!Spec) is about spec work, meaning work submitted into a client's competitive brief where payment depends on getting picked. The "build it first and send it cold" play is different: there's no competition and no client brief, you initiate it, you scope it, and you keep the rights. The honest risks are your time and setting the wrong expectation (that future work is also free), not the structural exploitation the manifestos target.

The sources: AIGA's position on spec work · No Free Pitches manifesto + petition · Readymag on Porto Rocha's 6,000-signature campaign · Inkbot Design's practitioner case against it.

🚀

How you'd run this play

Your unfair advantages

Vitalency is the obvious first target. Walk into a high-end medspa with their redesigned booking page (or a "ghost" Brain-OS dashboard) already built. You build on Astro + Cloudflare faster than agencies quoting four-week timelines, so the demo costs you an evening and lands like a finished product. That's the ultimate foot in the door for a B2B sale.

Lead with the AEO audit, it's the least crowded lane. Everyone sends SEO audits now. Almost nobody sends "here's whether ChatGPT and Gemini recommend you vs. your competitors." You have the AI + SEO chops to make that report genuinely sharp, and it's exactly the kind of thing a medspa owner has never seen.

For your publications: the same engine works as inbound. An embedded free-audit widget (AI Page Ready style) on your own sites turns every curious visitor into a captured lead, no cold outreach required.

The guardrails: scope the free thing tightly so "free" doesn't become the expectation, and keep sends CAN-SPAM / GDPR clean (see the Overloop legal guide). Want me to build a Vitalency demo-and-audit prototype you could actually send? Just say the word.
