Divorce Recovery Ebook: Master Plan
Decisions locked: Paid product ($5-30 tier) · Women 40/50+ · Byline: Bob Manthy, LPC & Annette Thompson (Bob first, for credibility) · Title: "A Stronger Chapter" · Brand home: strongerchapter.com · Seminar companion for Rebuilding Seminars cohorts · "A Stronger Chapter" is a series brand (book two: men's edition)1. The Market Gap
PositioningThe divorce recovery shelf splits into two piles, and neither serves your reader.
Pile one: the clinical classics. Bruce Fisher's Rebuilding (1981, with later editions) is still the research-backed standard, but it's written for everyone, it predates the modern gray-divorce wave, and its voice is a therapist's, not a peer's. Most of the other credible books share that DNA: written by clinicians, aimed at a general audience, light on the money problem, and old enough that a 55-year-old reader feels like an afterthought.
Pile two: the AI-template flood. The NovaDigital99 teardown (2026-07-03) is the type specimen: a free ~90-page funnel book plus a $4.99 planner that's literally five blank worksheets. No citations, no credentials, no lived detail, no specificity. Canva tiles instead of interior pages. Zero reviews. The entire "book" is visible in its free samples because there's nothing behind them.
The open lane: an evidence-literate, money-competent, emotionally honest recovery guide for women 40/50+, written by a woman who has lived it AND can read a study. Nobody credible is standing there. That's the book.
2. Differentiation Thesis
6 moatsSix things the template sellers can't fake and the classics don't offer:
- 1 Real authors. Two names on the cover, and both earn their place. Bob Manthy is a licensed professional counselor who has run RebuildingSeminars.com in-person divorce recovery seminars in Boulder, CO for 15 years: multiple cohorts a year, thousands of graduates, 200+ five-star Google reviews. Annette brings her story, her BS in Medical Technology, her science literacy, and decades of building things (adoption.com, orphanages on three continents, businesses). And there's the origin story the template sellers can't touch: Bob and Annette each rebuilt after their own divorces and found each other on the other side. That's the book's origin story and a marketing pillar, hope with receipts. E-E-A-T in human form; also exactly what Amazon and Google increasingly reward.
- 2 Evidence with receipts. Numbered footnote citations (your house style) to actual research: divorce adjustment timelines, grief models and their limits, the documented financial hit women take post-divorce, stress physiology, the menopause-divorce collision that nobody else covers.
- 3 The money chapter done honestly. Gray divorce cuts women's household income dramatically and the template books wave at it with "budget planning" bullets. We go specific: accounts, credit, Social Security claiming after divorce, retirement catch-up, real numbers.
- 4 The midlife-body chapter nobody writes. Divorce stress lands on a body that may already be in perimenopause or menopause. Sleep, cortisol, muscle, protein, HRT questions. This is your SmartStrongAlive home turf and it makes the book unclonable.
- 5 Designed inspiration, not AI filler. Motivational lines are a feature readers in this niche love, so we treat them as a design element: a chapter-opening epigraph for every chapter, pull quotes, and matching shareable quote cards ("Divorce is not the end of your story. It is the beginning of a stronger chapter."). Body prose stays in your real voice per the anti-AI profile; inspiration gets its own stage instead of being smeared through the paragraphs.
- 6 The classic-modern bridge. This is the positioning that makes the book original rather than merely better: the proven core of Fisher's Rebuilding model, openly credited, fused with the research that didn't exist in 1981. Internal Family Systems gives readers a kinder frame for the inner war ("the part of you that rages at 2 AM is trying to protect you"), attachment science explains why some people can't stop texting the ex, post-traumatic growth research shows what thriving afterward actually looks like. And here's what no competitor can claim: Bob has been field-testing the Fisher lineage with real cohorts for 15 years, so "Rebuilding, updated" isn't a positioning stretch, it's earned in-house. Nobody has written "Rebuilding, updated for today's 50-plus woman." We will.
3. Concept and Locked Title
Decided 2026-07-03Working concept: A stage-based recovery guide that walks the reader from the first brutal months to a designed new life. The intellectual spine is the best of Bruce Fisher's Rebuilding model (the rebuilding-blocks process view of recovery), updated with the four decades of research that came after it: Internal Family Systems parts work, adult attachment science, post-traumatic growth, nervous-system regulation, and gray-divorce financial data. Evidence under every claim, a worksheet for every chapter, and a 90-day action plan that makes the competitor's 30 days look like a pamphlet.
Locked title (decided 2026-07-03):
Decision record: The expert panel scored the three directions A 84.0 / B 80.0 / C 86.8 (rising to 89.8 conditional on a domain). The final pick is a hybrid: direction A's brand ("A Stronger Chapter") carrying direction C's honest, evidence-forward subtitle, scoring 88.2. Direction C's own brand was dropped because startingfromhere.com and startfromhere.com are both taken, while strongerchapter.com and its whole prefix family (herstrongerchapter, thestrongerchapter, strongerchapters) are open. Direction B's phrase "What Actually Helps" is reserved for the sales page headline, not the book cover. The "for Women Over 40" subtitle was confirmed 2026-07-03: most of Bob's seminar students are 40+, so the retail positioning and the cohort audience align.
Series roadmap: "A Stronger Chapter" is now a series brand living at strongerchapter.com, not a one-off title. Book one is this plan, the women's edition. Book two is a men's edition later: same evidence spine and chapter architecture, rewritten voice and examples, because Bob's seminars serve both men and women. Later formats (workbook, course, audio) live under the same brand roof.
We still avoid "Rebuilding" as the lead title word, but for search identity rather than brand separation: Fisher's book owns that shelf space, and this book should be findable on its own name while openly building on his model inside.
4. Chapter Architecture
10 chaptersTen chapters, each with: epigraph → real-talk opening → evidence-backed core → one story beat → the counselor's view (Bob's clinical sidebar) → worksheet → "this week" action step. Two recurring voices: Annette carries the narrative, Bob's sidebar gives the clinical read on each chapter's terrain.
Seminar companion note: chapter order will be reconciled with Bob's Rebuilding Seminars week arc so the book doubles as the take-home text for his cohorts. NEED: Bob, the exact week-by-week mapping.
- 1What recovery actually looks like. Real timelines from adjustment research (most people take 1-3 years, and that's normal), why the "you should be over it" chorus is wrong. Sets the honest tone.
- 2The grief nobody validates. Divorce grief vs. death grief, Fisher's rebuilding blocks introduced as the book's working map (which blocks four decades of evidence has confirmed, which need updating), why stage models are maps rather than schedules.
- 3Your brain on divorce. Rumination, intrusive memories, decision fatigue, sleep disruption; what the stress science says actually helps (and what's wellness-industry noise). Introduces the IFS frame gently: the obsessing, raging, numbing "parts" of you as protectors rather than defects.
- 4The identity rebuild. Who are you when you're not half of a couple: self-concept research, the "we" to "I" language shift, reclaiming pre-marriage threads. IFS parts work applied: meeting the inner critic as a protector part, Self-led decisions instead of critic-led ones.
- 5Money, honestly. The chapter that sells the book. Post-divorce financial triage checklist, credit and accounts, Social Security divorced-spouse benefits, retirement catch-up at 45/55, when to get professional help.
- 6Your body is going through this too. The divorce-menopause collision: cortisol, sleep, muscle loss, protein, appetite chaos, medical self-advocacy. The unclonable chapter.
- 7The people audit. Friendships that split in the divorce, family dynamics, loneliness research, building a new bench.
- 8Dating, eventually. Or not. Readiness signals, attachment patterns the second time around, the permission to opt out.
- 9Designing the new life. Odyssey-planning style tools: three versions of the next five years, small experiments before big leaps.
- 10The 90-day reset. Week-by-week action plan integrating every chapter's steps. Triple the competitor's 30-day arc, with an actual method behind it.
Evidence base note (updated per Annette, 2026-07-03): Fisher's Rebuilding model is the cited structural backbone, not distant background. We take the blocks that hold up, update the ones research has moved past, and add what didn't exist in 1981: Internal Family Systems (Schwartz), adult attachment science, post-traumatic growth, nervous-system regulation, gray-divorce financial data. Every framework gets attribution and lay-reader translation; we build on ideas, never copy expression. Overlap with the Rebuilding project is welcome, and anything useful flows both directions.
5. Reader Experience and Worksheets
Assets- 12-15 integrated worksheets (vs. their 5 blank templates): each one earns its place by connecting to the chapter's method, not "journal your feelings" filler. Every worksheet works two ways: solo at the kitchen table AND in group/cohort settings, because Bob's seminar circles are a first-class use case, not an afterthought.
- Fillable PDF edition + printable pack as a bundle upsell.
- 10 quote cards matching the chapter epigraphs, doubling as Pinterest/Facebook marketing assets.
- Design: bright, light, editorial (your standing palette rules), real interior pages in the sample gallery, the exact opposite of Canva-tile marketing.
6. Format, Pricing, Platform
Go to marketLength: 28,000-35,000 words, 120-150 designed pages. Substantial enough to justify price, tight enough to finish.
Pricing:
Platforms, in order:
- Payhip or Gumroad direct (best margins, we own the buyer emails), with the sales page living at strongerchapter.com
- Amazon KDP paperback launch-adjacent, not "later": Bob's cohorts need physical books in hand, so print moves up to ship alongside the ebook
- Kindle edition for discovery
- Possible Substack serialization of excerpts to warm the audience
Free chapter 1 as the lead magnet, gated by email. Their funnel model, executed with actual substance.
Bulk-order path for seminar enrollees: a simple way for every cohort member to get a physical copy, priced for group orders.
The two-way funnel: the book funnels readers to RebuildingSeminars.com for the in-person experience, and the seminars funnel graduates to the book and strongerchapter.com. Each asset feeds the other.
7. Production Plan and Division of Labor
4-6 weeks part-time| Phase | Who | What | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. Research sprint | Charlie | Evidence base per chapter into resources/, competitor scan of the credible tier (top 10 real books), citation library | ~1 week background |
| B. Joint story interview | Bob + Annette | Bob: seminar curriculum arc, 15 years of cohort war stories, the counselor's-view material. Annette: what helped, what was garbage, timeline moments, what you'd tell yourself at month one. Both: the meeting story (rebuilt separately, found each other on the other side) | 1-2 sessions |
| C. Chapter drafts | Charlie | deep-draft per chapter, anti-AI voice pass for BOTH voices (Charlie already ghost-writes Bob from his corpus in the Rebuilding project), footnote citations, epigraphs proposed per chapter | 2-3 weeks |
| D. Voice edit | Annette + Bob | Annette: ~30 min per chapter, make the narrative yours, veto anything that doesn't sound like you. Bob: review passes on his counselor's-view sidebars and clinical accuracy | rolling |
| E. Quality gate | Charlie | content-ops expert panel to 90+, Codex + Gemini + Grok adversarial review, then design/layout + worksheets | ~1 week |
| F. Launch | All three | Free chapter funnel live, quote cards, SmartStrongAlive cross-promo, KDP paperback + ebook together, seminar bulk-order path live | ~1 week |
Realistic elapsed time: 4-6 weeks part-time. Annette's total hands-on time: roughly 8-10 hours across the interview and voice edits. Bob's total hands-on time: roughly 6-8 hours across the joint interview, chapter review passes, and the seminar-arc mapping.
8. Launch Funnel Notes
Distribution- Free chapter → email list → launch sequence (3-4 emails, written under the substack-writing-best-practices skill).
- Bob's alumni list and current cohorts as launch audience: thousands of Rebuilding Seminars graduates already trust the author on the cover. That's a warm launch list no template seller can buy.
- Google-review credibility on the sales page: 200+ five-star reviews of Bob's seminars, quoted and linked. Social proof with 15 years of receipts.
- The origin story as a marketing pillar: Bob and Annette each rebuilt after their own divorces and found each other on the other side. Hope with receipts, and it's true.
- Cross-promotion with RebuildingSeminars.com: the book points readers to the seminars, the seminars hand graduates the book. Two-way funnel, one brand family.
- SmartStrongAlive: 2-3 issues that naturally seed book themes (the divorce-menopause collision chapter is a ready-made issue).
- Quote cards on Pinterest and Facebook; the epigraph strategy does double duty as the organic marketing engine.
- Later: the book becomes the anchor asset for whatever the DivorceRecovery project grows into (course, workshop, audio edition), plus the men's edition as book two in the series.
