bobmanthy.com: audit and topical map

Every page indexed, no technical faults worth the name, and 1 click in 90 days. The problem is not the build. It is that the volume sits in a cluster the site circles without ever landing on, and the only nationally sellable service is missing entirely.

Prepared 2026-08-08

⚠️ One recommendation in the companion TasteBoulder plan is now superseded. Later on 2026-08-08 Annette settled the Boulder topic boundaries charter, which makes topic ownership across her five Boulder sites binding. The charter does not rule on the Boulder Farmers Market by name, but by its own boundaries tasteboulder never publishes attractions or events and boulderthingstodo owns place, event and attraction intent, so the Farmers Market cluster (8,100/mo) belongs to boulderthingstodo, not TasteBoulder as that plan recommends. The charter also independently reached the same conclusion this audit did about "boulder weather": nobody chases it. Read the charter before acting on any Boulder recommendation written earlier that day.

August 8, 2026 · Search Console (90 days) + DataForSEO + live crawl · Scope: bobmanthy.com only

Two constraints shape everything below, both from Annette: Bob can only provide counseling in Colorado, but can coach anywhere, and rebuildingseminars.com is a separate property and is not audited here.

That licensure split turns out to be the whole story.

The finding in one paragraph

bobmanthy.com is in good technical health. All 12 pages inspected are indexed, no mobile usability issues, no schema errors, no stale crawls, redirects and canonicals all correct. It has 22 blog posts on a coherent theme. It also earned 1 click from 94 impressions in 90 days, because the phrases it targets have almost no search volume, while the phrases with volume sit one step broader and the site never quite says them. And the single service Bob can legally sell to all 50 states, coaching, has no page on the website at all.

Step 1: the audit

Traffic

Metric 90 days (May 7 to Aug 5)
Clicks 1
Impressions 94
CTR 1.06%
Average position 21.1
Distinct queries 11

Position buckets: 0 queries in 1 to 3, 1 in 4 to 10, 2 in 11 to 20, 8 at 21 or worse.

Branded search is zero. Not low, zero. Nobody is searching "Bob Manthy". For a private practice that is normal at this stage, but it means every visitor has to be won on a non-branded query, and there are only eleven of those.

What is already close

Four queries are nearer than the headline suggests, all on one impression or two:

Query Position
c-suite mental health 10
rebuilding seminars 11
high-functioning burnout signs symptoms 20
rebuilding book 22

The /rebuilding/ page is the site's strongest, with 28 impressions across both URL forms at position 13.8. That is more than a quarter of the site's total impressions on one page.

Technical: clean, and I checked the things that looked wrong

Three things looked like faults in the Search Console data and turned out not to be. Recording them so nobody re-raises them:

  • Duplicate trailing-slash URLs. GSC lists /rebuilding and /rebuilding/ separately, and the same for five blog posts. I probed them: the no-slash form returns 308 to the slashed form, canonicals are self-referencing and correct, and http:// 301s to https. This is Google reporting a historical crawl, not a live duplication. It will consolidate on its own. No action.
  • Indexing. Twelve pages inspected via the URL Inspection API: 0 not indexed, 0 mobile issues, 0 rich result errors, 0 stale crawls. Indexing is not the problem.
  • robots.txt. Genuinely well built. It welcomes GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and the rest by name while keeping all of them out of /rebuilding/reports/, and the Sitemap line points at sitemap-index.xml, which is the file that actually exists. Better than most sites I have looked at this week.

Two small real items:

Issue Detail Priority
/videos/ is indexed but not in the sitemap Returns 200, self-canonical, picks up impressions at position 5, absent from all 32 sitemap entries Low, add it
www.bobmanthy.com serves 200 Canonical correctly points at the non-www, so Google will consolidate, but a 301 would be cleaner than relying on it Low

There is no technical work worth doing here. That is unusual and worth saying plainly, because it means the entire opportunity is in aim.

Step 2: the topical map

The licensure split is the map

Because counseling is Colorado-only and coaching is national, these are two different SEO problems with different economics, and merging them produces nonsense. Split cleanly:

Cluster A: burnout and high-achiever mental health. National. Informational. Feeds the coaching business, and educates Colorado prospects into the counseling business. High volume, low competition.

Cluster B: Colorado therapy. Local. Transactional. Feeds counseling only. Low volume for Bob's niche, brutal competition on anything broader.

Cluster A: national, and this is where the traffic is

Query Volume/mo (US) Competition CPC Current page Status
burnout symptoms 12,100 LOW (15) $2.69 none 🔴 MISSING
mens mental health 8,100 LOW (16) $21.98 /blog/therapy-for-men-in-leadership/ 🟠 THIN
how to recover from burnout 4,400 LOW (23) $3.70 /blog/burnout-recovery-high-performers/ 🟠 THIN
signs of burnout at work 2,400 LOW (28) $1.65 /blog/signs-of-high-functioning-burnout/ 🟠 THIN
am i burnt out 1,000 LOW (17) $4.40 none 🔴 MISSING
work stress therapy 1,000 LOW (12) $21.90 /blog/cant-turn-brain-off-after-work/ 🟠 THIN
burnout coach 260 LOW (28) $6.22 none 🔴 MISSING
therapy for high achievers 170 LOW (30) $15.97 two pages 🟡 CONFLICT
executive burnout 90 LOW (14) $5.55 /blog/executive-burnout-counseling/ ✅ HAVE
imposter syndrome coach 50 LOW (9) /blog/impostor-syndrome-high-achievers/ 🟠 THIN

Roughly 30,000 monthly searches, every single one at LOW competition. Competition index runs 9 to 30 across the whole cluster. That is an open field.

⚠️ One number in that table is softer than it looks. I checked the "burnout coach" results, and about half of page one is aimed at people who want to become a burnout coach, not hire one: a master coach training program, a certification course, an ICF blog post addressed to coaches, and a "guide to becoming a burnout coach". The related searches say the same (burnout coach certification, burnout coach jobs, how to become a burnout coach). Treat 260 as more like 130 of real client intent. Still worth the page, because it is the only nationally sellable service and currently has zero, but do not plan against the headline figure.

The site is circling this cluster. It has posts on high-functioning burnout, burnout recovery for high performers, not being able to turn your brain off after work. Every one of them is titled for the narrow niche while the demand sits one step broader. "Signs of high-functioning burnout" is a real phrase with a handful of searches. "Signs of burnout at work" does 2,400 a month.

This is the same shape as the tasteboulder finding, and the same cheap fix: the pages exist, they are wearing the wrong names.

Cluster A2: the competitor gap, added after the fact

This section exists because Annette asked the question I should have asked myself. The cluster above was built from seed keywords and SERP reading. It was not built from a competitor gap pull, which is exactly what the topical-map skill says to do in Step 2. Running domain_intersection against flourishcounseling.com (Flourish Executive Counseling and Coaching, the closest real competitor) found a larger opportunity than anything in Cluster A:

Query Volume/mo Competition CPC Bob had
executive coaching 8,100 Medium (41) $16.78 nothing
leadership coaching ~6,000 Low (20) $14.53 nothing
what is executive coaching 720 Low (24) $6.35 nothing
burnout prevention 590 Low (13) $5.63 nothing
self awareness as a leader 590 Low (21) $3.97 nothing
stress management coach ~500 Low (10) $6.08 nothing

⚠️ Two of those needed correcting before use. "Leadership coaching" reports 49,500/mo, but August 2025 alone reads 550,000 against 4,400 to 12,100 every other month; the real baseline is about 6,000. "Stress management coach" reports 1,900, but December 2025 reads 14,800 against 210 to 880 otherwise; the real figure is about 500. Both averages are artifacts of a single spike month and quoting them raw would have oversold the plan by roughly 8x and 4x.

allieevanslmft.com was pulled too and turned out not to be a competitor. Her gap is entirely IFS, EMDR and somatic trauma work across Denver and San Diego. A different practice, not a rival for these terms.

Annette's question, and the answer changed the recommendation. Page level, meaning links pointing at the exact URL that ranks:

Term Position Page Ref. domains Followed
executive coaching 8 bcg.com 9 9
executive coaching 6 franklincovey.com 10 9
executive coaching 2 kornferry.com 22 18
executive coaching 4 ccl.org 147 37
executive coaching 5 erickson.edu 154 0, all nofollow
leadership coaching 5 headstart.gov 5 3
leadership coaching 6 growthspace.com ~0 ~0
leadership coaching 7 rutgers.edu 160 9
leadership coaching 1 ccl.org 60 46

Nobody is winning these by building links to the page. Head Start ranks fifth for "leadership coaching" with three followed links to that URL. BCG ranks eighth for "executive coaching" with nine. Erickson ranks fifth with zero.

Domain level is where the barrier actually is:

Domain Referring domains
rutgers.edu 128,735
bcg.com 78,566
kornferry.com 19,770
franklincovey.com 14,390
ccl.org 13,986
td.org 13,491
headstart.gov 7,997
georgetown (scs) 4,116
erickson.edu 1,391
growthspace.com 1,099
dce.harvard.edu 518
flourishcounseling.com 119
bobmanthy.com 2
Bone Voyage, at Annette's peak 1,187

So the question is not whether a coaching page can attract 200 links. It is whether bobmanthy.com can become a domain with a few hundred referring domains, and Annette has already done that once at roughly six times the scale, taking bonevoyagedogrescue.com from DR 0.8 and zero referring domains in May 2020 to 1,187 referring domains, DR 62, and 4,096 simultaneous page-one keywords, against PetSmart Charities and the ASPCA.

At 1,187 the domain would sit above Erickson, Growthspace and Harvard's DCE subdomain, all of which currently rank on page one for these terms.

Two honest caveats, both about difficulty rather than possibility:

  1. A dog rescue is a far easier link magnet than a solo counseling practice. Adoption stories, volunteers, local press, donation drives, a Mexico angle. A one-person practice has almost none of those hooks. Same playbook, harder soil.
  2. Bone Voyage took under four years, and the steep stretch came only after the topic-cluster architecture finished indexing. Expect that shape here, not a quarter.

Revised position: do not write off the head terms. Treat "executive coaching" and "leadership coaching" as the 18-to-36-month target that a deliberate link programme makes reachable, and win the informational tier underneath them now.

Cluster B: Colorado, and the honest read is discouraging

Query Volume/mo (CO) Competition CPC Current page Status
therapist denver 1,600 HIGH (99) $42.21 none ⛔ Do not chase
therapist boulder / boulder therapist / therapy boulder co 590 HIGH (93) $31.65 none ⛔ Do not chase
couples / marriage counseling boulder 110 HIGH (99) $19.33 /relationship-counseling/ 🟠 THIN
denver executive coach 40 MED (61) $18.64 none 🟡 Maybe
counseling boulder 30 HIGH (94) $14.89 none Low value
burnout therapist 20 MED (41) $13.62 none Low value
therapy for executives 10 HIGH (100) /blog/therapy-for-executives/ + 2 more 🟡 CONFLICT
executive therapist boulder 0 /blog/executive-therapist-boulder/ 🟠 Page for a query nobody types

Bob's core positioning phrase, "therapy for executives", does ten searches a month in Colorado. "Executive therapist boulder" does zero, and there is a blog post targeting it by name.

The high-volume local terms are a different problem. At competition index 93 to 99 and CPC of $31 to $42, "therapist boulder" is one of the most contested local terms there is, and the SERP is Psychology Today, Zencare, and established practices with dozens of Google reviews sitting in the local pack. A new solo site does not win that with content.

So the honest recommendation for Cluster B: stop trying to win it with pages. Local therapy discovery runs through the local pack and the directories. The levers are a Google Business Profile with real reviews, a Psychology Today profile, and a Zencare listing. Those three will out-perform any blog post Bob writes about Boulder.

Conflicts: 22 posts on one narrow theme

The blog has heavy internal overlap. Four groups where two or three posts answer the same query:

Query cluster Competing pages Recommended owner
Executive burnout /blog/executive-burnout-counseling/, /blog/burnout-recovery-high-performers/, /executive-counseling/ Service page owns the transactional term; blog posts take specific angles and link up
Therapy for executives / C-suite /blog/therapy-for-executives/, /blog/counseling-c-suite-leaders/, /executive-counseling/ /executive-counseling/. The two posts are near-duplicates of it
Founders and engineers /blog/therapy-for-engineers/, /blog/therapy-tech-founders-engineers-colorado/, /blog/counseling-for-founders/ One page. Three exist and they say nearly the same thing
Colorado and Boulder /blog/executive-therapist-boulder/, /blog/online-counseling-professionals-colorado/ Merge into one Colorado counseling page

Do not delete these. Pick the owner, retitle the others onto their own narrower angle, and have them link up. On a site with 1 click and no authority, consolidating the signal costs nothing and is the only thing that makes 22 posts behave like 22 posts instead of four.

The gap that matters most

There is no coaching page. Not a thin one, not a badly titled one. None.

Site inventory: /executive-counseling/, /relationship-counseling/, /rebuilding, /fees, /schedule, /about, /videos/, /blog/ and 22 posts. Every service page describes counseling, which Bob can only sell in Colorado.

His only nationally sellable service is invisible on his own website. "Burnout coach" does 260 a month at competition index 28. "Imposter syndrome coach" does 50 at index 9. Those are winnable, they are national, and there is nothing to rank.

⚠️ One professional caution, and it is not an SEO point. If Bob markets coaching across state lines, the page has to draw a clear line between coaching and therapy. An LPC whose out-of-state coaching reads like therapy has a licensure exposure, not just a marketing problem. He already has /blog/therapy-vs-executive-coaching/, which suggests he knows this. The coaching page should state the distinction plainly, and he should have his own eyes on that wording before it goes live. I have drafted it conservatively; treat that paragraph as his call, not mine.

Step 3: what to build, in order

✅ Shipped 2026-08-08

All six competitor-gap pages are live, arranged so they do not compete with each other. Four commercial coaching pages on one intent would have been the cannibalization this map exists to prevent, so they split by entry point, not by synonym:

URL Targets Volume Entry point
/coaching/ executive coaching 8,100 Pillar. The person is depleted
/leadership-coaching/ leadership coaching ~6,000 Functioning, wants to lead better
/stress-management-coaching/ stress management coach ~500 The body will not come down
/blog/what-is-executive-coaching/ what is executive coaching 720 Definitional
/blog/burnout-prevention/ burnout prevention 590 Informational
/blog/self-awareness-as-a-leader/ self awareness as a leader 590 Informational

Plus the six retitles, and /coaching/ moved from "Burnout Coaching" to "Executive Coaching" in its title and H1. That trade is deliberate: it gives up the title slot for "burnout coach" (260/mo, of which roughly half is people wanting to become one, so ~130 of real client intent) to take "executive coaching" at 8,100. Burnout stays as the page's angle and throughout its body.

A conflict pass across all 41 pages confirms no two now claim the same query. Three pages contain the phrase "executive coaching", and that is the cluster working rather than cannibalization: one commercial, one definitional, one comparative.

Still open: the three new articles ship without hero images. public/images/blog/ holds exactly one file per slug, so a new post either duplicates another post's photograph or ships a 404. heroImage is now optional in the content schema and the figure renders only when present. Add the images and they appear, no code change needed.

The original list, for the record

1. /coaching/ service page. National, no licensure limit, currently zero pages. Draft written, see below.

2. Retitle the burnout cluster. Six posts, titles and H1s only, no URL changes:

Page New title Target Volume
/blog/signs-of-high-functioning-burnout/ Signs of Burnout at Work (and the High-Functioning Kind Nobody Notices) signs of burnout at work 2,400
/blog/burnout-recovery-high-performers/ How to Recover From Burnout When You Cannot Just Stop Working how to recover from burnout 4,400
/blog/cant-turn-brain-off-after-work/ Work Stress You Cannot Switch Off: When It Is Time for Help work stress therapy 1,000
/blog/therapy-for-men-in-leadership/ Men's Mental Health at the Top: What Leaders Do Not Say Out Loud mens mental health 8,100
/blog/impostor-syndrome-high-achievers/ Imposter Syndrome in High Achievers: Coaching and Therapy Approaches imposter syndrome coach 50
/blog/executive-burnout-counseling/ keep, it already owns executive burnout executive burnout 90

3. Two new cornerstone pages for the biggest MISSING terms: burnout symptoms (12,100) and am I burnt out (1,000, and a natural self-assessment format).

4. Consolidate the four conflict groups.

5. Directories, not content, for the Colorado side. Google Business Profile, Psychology Today, Zencare. This will do more for counseling enquiries than everything above combined, and it is not a writing job.

6. Add /videos/ to the sitemap.

What to ignore

  • "therapist boulder" (590) and "therapist denver" (1,600). Competition index 93 and 99, CPC $31 and $42, local pack owned by practices with 25 to 72 reviews. Content will not win these.
  • The trailing-slash duplicates. Already redirecting correctly.
  • "founder coach" showing 1,600/mo. It is an artifact. Every month reads 70 to 210 except December 2025, which reads 18,100. The average is fiction and the real number is about 150.
  • Technical SEO generally. There is nothing here to fix.
