The short version

The page you sent is not showing you a September price. It's showing you the last few suites on a nearly sold-out sailing.

Celebrity Edge, roundtrip Seattle, identical Dawes Glacier itinerary:

Same ship, same ports, three weeks apart, seven times the price. Nothing about September is expensive. That one sailing is just picked over.

The recommendation: Discovery Princess, Sep 5, Whittier to Vancouver, $629 per person. It's 1/15th the price of the Celebrity sailing you were looking at, and it's a materially better itinerary.

Why it's better, not just cheaper

Celebrity's Alaska Dawes Glacier itinerary cruises Endicott Arm. That's a fjord, it's pretty, and it's the consolation prize.

Glacier Bay National Park is the real thing, and it's rationed. The National Park Service caps cruise-ship entries and hands most of the permits to Holland America and Princess as historical operators under ANILCA. Norwegian, Cunard, Seabourn, and Viking hold a smaller share. Celebrity does not go into Glacier Bay on either of the sailings you're looking at. No amount of money spent on that Celebrity cruise buys you Glacier Bay, which is why the $9,311 is doubly bad value.

The luxury and small-ship end, for reference

Not recommended at these prices, but this is what's out there in September:

UnCruise and Lindblad are genuinely different products (12 to 90 passengers, kayaks, skiffs, no ports of call, real wilderness). If the appeal of Alaska is wilderness rather than a big ship, they're the honest alternative, and they cost roughly what that $9,311 Celebrity suite costs. That's the only framing where the Celebrity price makes any sense at all, and even then UnCruise is the better buy.

The catch with the cheap ones

Almost every sub-$800 fare is a one-way sailing between Vancouver and Whittier or Seward. That's not a trick, it's actually the better Alaska itinerary (more glacier time, no repeated sea days), but it changes the travel math:

• Open-jaw flights. Denver to Anchorage out, Vancouver back home. That's more expensive and more fiddly than a roundtrip to Seattle.
• Whittier is not Anchorage. It's about 60 miles southeast, through a one-lane tunnel. Princess sells a coach or rail transfer from Anchorage airport. Budget time and money for it.
• Seward is further, about 125 miles from Anchorage.
• Vancouver means a passport and a border crossing, and the return flight home is from YVR.

Roundtrip Seattle is the simple version: cheap direct flights from Denver, no open-jaw, no transfer, no international leg. The cheapest good roundtrip-Seattle option with Glacier Bay is Norwegian Encore, Sep 13, $799, or Royal Princess, Aug 22, $849.

So the honest comparison isn't $629 versus $854. It's more like:

The Princess sailing is still the better trip. Just don't assume the $170 gap is the whole story.

Things I have not yet confirmed

1. Balcony pricing. Every fare above is the lead-in inside cabin. In Alaska a balcony genuinely matters, because the scenery happens while you're sailing, and Glacier Bay day is spent largely on the ship. Expect a real step up. I need to price balconies on the two or three finalists before you decide, and I can't responsibly guess at the number.
2. The Celebrity Summit discrepancy. Celebrity's own site quotes the Sep 4 Summit at $3,266 per person while AlaskaCruises.com quotes $702 for the same sailing. Almost certainly Celebrity is quoting its bundled "All Included" rate on a higher cabin category and the aggregator is quoting cruise-only inside. Worth resolving before using either number, but it doesn't change the recommendation.
3. Flight costs from Denver. Not yet priced. August departures are two to six weeks out, so airfare will be ugly. This is the strongest argument for September over August.
4. Late September. I sampled 273 of the 375 August and September sailings. Sep 17 onward is end-of-season and starts turning into repositioning cruises down to Los Angeles and San Diego. Those are cheap but they are not Alaska trips.

What I'd actually do

Book Discovery Princess, Sep 5, Whittier to Vancouver, in a balcony rather than the inside cabin that generates the $629 headline. Fly Denver to Anchorage a day early, sleep in Anchorage, take the Princess transfer to Whittier. Fly home from Vancouver.

If open-jaw flights and the Whittier transfer sound like more trouble than they're worth, take Norwegian Encore, Sep 13, roundtrip Seattle, $799, which still gets you Glacier Bay.

Under no circumstances the Celebrity Edge on Sep 4.

Two things to decide before I go further: how many of you are going, and whether you want a balcony. Both change the numbers enough that pricing the alternatives now would be guesswork.
