Just east of Glenwood Canyon along Interstate 70, there is a circular depression in the hillside that most people drive past without a second look. This is Dotsero Crater, Colorado's only known volcano, and one of the youngest volcanic features in the contiguous United States.
The USGS dates the most recent Dotsero eruption at approximately four thousand one hundred and fifty years ago. That places it at roughly twenty-two hundred BCE. The Bronze Age. Mammoths had already been extinct for several thousand years by then, but anatomically modern humans were present in the region. The Ancestral Puebloans to the south were already building villages. This eruption happened in human memory, or close to it.
Dotsero is classified as a phreatomagmatic maar, which means the eruption was driven not just by magma but by the violent interaction of rising basaltic magma with groundwater. When magma encounters groundwater at sufficient depth, the water flashes instantly to steam. The steam expands with explosive force, shattering the overlying rock and blasting a crater through it...
