The moment the valley opens
There is a moment, somewhere on US-160 east of Pagosa Springs, when the mountains stop and the world opens up in a way that Colorado does not usually allow. You have been driving through forests and canyons for days. Then the San Juan Mountains pull back, and in front of you is a flat, high-altitude basin so large it has its own weather system, its own sky. Fifty miles wide, a hundred and twenty miles long. You can see mountains on both sides at once.

Artesian water rising through the same fault system that built this valley, carrying minerals that have not seen sunlight since they sank into the earth long before any human walked this ground. From the pools, you will look east and see Blanca Peak on clear days. The valley is waiting. Let's go in.

Geology
The Rio Grande Rift — The Earth Pulling Itself Apart

One radical idea
The ground beneath your feet is moving away from the ground on the far side of it. Slowly, a few millimeters per year, but persistently, the Rocky Mountains are spreading apart along a line running from central Colorado down through New Mexico into west Texas and northern Mexico. Geologists call this the Rio Grande Rift. The San Luis Valley is a graben: the dropped center section of crust pulling apart, one of the largest and most active in North America.
The numbers
  • The rift began pulling the crust apart 35 to 30 million years ago
  • Up to 30,000 feet of sediment have accumulated below the valley floor, six miles deep, never reached by drilling
  • Geothermal gradient: 37 degrees Celsius per kilometer or higher near active fault zones, versus 25 for most of North America
  • At about 2 kilometers depth in parts of the valley, rock and water temperatures exceed 150 degrees Celsius
  • The Sangre de Cristo fault has displaced the same Precambrian rock by more than 20,000 feet vertically
The mountains didn't grow up. The valley dropped away.
The Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the eastern edge are a fault block, a mass of rock left standing while the valley floor sank beside them. Look east from anywhere in the valley and you can trace the fault line: the hard edge between flat and vertical with almost no foothills in between. The fault zones are also the plumbing for every hot spring in the valley, including the one you are heading toward today.
Still moving
The Sangre de Cristo fault system is still active. Surveys of deposits along the fault show displacement from earthquakes within the last ten thousand years. The mountains are still rising, the valley floor still sinking. This is your landscape for today: the floor of a geologically active rift basin that has been developing for 35 million years, still heating the water that will be waiting for you at Joyful Journey.
The San Luis Valley Aquifer System

Water underground
All that sediment is soaked. The valley sits over one of the most productive aquifer systems in the American West: two interconnected water bodies, an unconfined shallow aquifer in the top couple hundred feet, and a deeper confined artesian aquifer below a clay layer that seals it. Water enters from snowmelt in the surrounding mountains and in places rises under its own pressure when tapped.
The artesian well boom
Starting in the late 1880s, drilling technology made it possible to tap the confined aquifer, and the wells flowed without pumping because of the artesian pressure. By 1900, thousands of artesian wells had been drilled across the valley, transforming agriculture. The flat fields you see growing potatoes today are irrigated from aquifer water that entered the system as snowmelt on those mountain peaks miles away.

The wrong place for a dunefield
If you had to design the worst possible place in Colorado to grow sand dunes, you would pick the foot of a 14,000-foot mountain range, in an alpine valley at 7,600 feet elevation, in the middle of a rift basin that receives less than eight inches of rain a year. The dunes do not make intuitive sense. They are too big for where they are, too desert-feeling for a landscape surrounded by snow-covered peaks. And yet: 30 square miles of sand piled 750 feet high, the tallest dunes on the continent.
Lake Alamosa and the sand source
About 440,000 years ago, a large lake called Lake Alamosa covered much of the southern San Luis Valley. It persisted for hundreds of thousands of years, accumulating thick layers of fine-grained sediment. Then it broke through its southern rim and drained. Where a deep lake had been, there was now a vast flat plain of dry lake-bottom sediment exposed to the open sky and the relentless valley winds. The sand on that lake floor came eroded from both the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo ranges over millions of years.
Three conditions that had to coincide
  • The rift basin created a flat, enclosed catchment for sediment over tens of millions of years
  • The primary southwest wind funnels toward three low passes in the Sangres and drops its sand load at the mountain front
  • Medano Creek and Sand Creek capture sand blown off the front edge and recycle it back to the valley floor
The recycling system
Sand goes up into the dunes from the valley, pushed by southwest winds. Sand is pushed toward the mountain passes by storm winds. Medano Creek and Sand Creek carry it back down to the valley floor. The next southwest wind pushes it back up again. The dunefield is in dynamic equilibrium, recycling the same material over and over. Star Dune, the tallest, rises 750 feet. High Dune, closest to the parking area, stands 699 feet. For scale: that is roughly half the height of the Empire State Building, made entirely of eroded mountain rock and dried lake sediment, moved grain by grain on the wind.
Medano Creek surge flow
Walk to the creek edge on the right day in spring or early summer and you will see a phenomenon called surge flow: pulses of water moving in waves, the result of sand dams forming and releasing upstream. The water rises to ankle depth, then falls, then rises again, in rhythmic pulses that look like something programmed and are actually the natural hydraulics of a creek heavily loaded with sand. Children play in it. No tides, no pumps. Just sand and water working out their physics.
🚗 Chapter 3: Drive: Entering the Valley
What to Watch for on the Drive In

The moment the canyon opens
You left Pagosa Springs heading east on US-160. For the first part, you are still in forest. Then the canyon opens. There is no subtle transition. The walls just stop. The forest thins, the road levels, and suddenly the horizon is so far away it does not look real. Resist the urge to explain it while it is happening. Just look. Fifty miles of valley floor, perfectly flat, ending against a mountain wall that goes straight up without foothills. Rock and flat with a hard edge between them.
Route: US-160 east then CO-17 north
  • South Fork to Monte Vista: across the western valley floor, approximately 7,600 feet elevation throughout
  • The fields around you grow potatoes. The San Luis Valley produces the majority of Colorado's potato crop at the highest elevation in the world where that statement makes sense.
  • Monte Vista: the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge is just south of town. In early March this area hosts up to 27,000 sandhill cranes. By late May the peak has passed, but the story is in the wildlife chapter.
  • Alamosa: junction of the Rio Grande and the valley's main road network. Turn left onto CO-17 north.
  • CO-17 north: mountains to your east, valley floor to your west, 30 uninterrupted miles of Sangre de Cristo views
Watch for the dunes
At some point in the next 30 miles north on CO-17, you will see something that makes no sense: sand. Actual tan-colored dunes pressed against the base of the mountains, visible as a lighter-colored wedge rising toward the rock. You are seeing the Great Sand Dunes from the highway before you arrive. The chapter on how they got there runs immediately after this one.
Moffat and Joyful Journey
Moffat is a small community about 50 miles north of Alamosa. You are there before you realize the town started. Joyful Journey is a short drive off CO-17 toward the mountains. Find your suit, your towel, and some water. This afternoon, you are getting in.
♨️ Chapter 4: Joyful Journey Hot Springs

The place
Three main outdoor soaking pools at different temperatures step up a gentle hillside at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A cooler pool at 98 degrees, a mid-temperature pool at 104 degrees, and the view pool at 108 degrees, the hottest. From the upper pools, the Sangre de Cristo peaks fill the eastern horizon, and the valley floor spreads west for miles, the San Juan Mountains marking the far wall on clear days. The spring produces no sulfur smell.
The water chemistry
  • Base type: sodium bicarbonate, the same class as Steamboat Springs on Day 1
  • Boron: a trace element from deep crustal sources, biologically active, associated with bone density and inflammatory markers at consistent dosing levels. Found here because the San Luis Valley's elevated geothermal gradient means deep fluid circulation.
  • Lithium: associated with deep geological processes, in contact with granite and pegmatite at high temperatures. Present in natural spring water at a fraction of pharmaceutical doses, associated in research with mood regulation.
  • Springs emerge at 120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, cooled in distribution before entering pools
  • Artesian: continuously refreshed by new spring water, not recirculated treated water
How artesian water works here
Artesian water rises under its own pressure because it comes from a confined aquifer sealed above by clay, with the recharge zone at higher elevation than the outlet. Water entering as snowmelt on the Sangres at 10,000 to 14,000 feet flows downward through the aquifer under gravity. Where the clay seal is broken by a fault, the pressure pushes the water upward. Joyful Journey's spring rises at the fault zone on the eastern valley edge because the Rio Grande Rift created exactly that break in the clay layer.
The view
On a clear afternoon in late May, the peaks carry significant snowpack. Blanca Peak, at 14,345 feet the highest point in the range, is visible from the facility on clear days about 40 miles south. You are at 7,664 feet. The mountains behind you rise nearly 7,000 feet above that in roughly 10 horizontal miles. Stay as long as your body wants to. The valley is not going anywhere.

Founded April 1851
San Luis, Colorado — 25 Years Older Than the State

San Luis was founded in April 1851. Colorado became a state in 1876.
The people who established San Luis were not Americans. They were Hispano settlers from Taos, New Mexico, moving north on the authority of the Sangre de Cristo Land Grant, granted by the Mexican government in 1843. They built on Culebra Creek in the pattern of Spanish colonial settlement: homes around a central plaza, fields in long narrow strips running perpendicular to the creek, each strip giving a family access to both water and road. A social geometry as much as an agricultural one.
The first water right in Colorado
Within a year of founding, settlers dug the San Luis People's Ditch. The first recorded water right in the state of Colorado, predating statehood by nearly 25 years, hand-dug using wooden shovels and leather buckets. It diverts water from Culebra Creek into the network of channels that irrigate the farm strips on both sides of the creek. The San Luis People's Ditch is 170-plus years old and still irrigates the same fields it was built for.
Acequia governance
  • An acequia is a community irrigation ditch. The word is Arabic in origin, from Moorish Spain via colonial Mexico.
  • Water is a shared community resource. The ditch is maintained collectively.
  • Each parciante (ditch member) receives allocation proportional to field size and current flow
  • Governed by a mayordomo (watermaster) elected annually with authority to manage distribution and resolve disputes
  • In drought years, everyone gets less. In good years, the allocation expands.
The land grant court cases
In 2002, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled in favor of the original Hispano settlers' heirs on the question of traditional grazing rights on the mountain commons above their deeded land, a decision acknowledging a 150-year community relationship with the land that Anglo property law had tried to extinguish. San Luis today has about 600 people, most descended from the original settlers, in a village that looks recognizably like the plaza town established in 1851. The church in the central plaza has been in continuous operation since 1862.
🏔 Chapter 6: Fort Garland and Kit Carson
Established 1858
Fort Garland — Peacekeepers, Enforcers, and the Last Command

The fort's complicated mission
Fort Garland was established in 1858 at the foot of La Veta Pass, built of adobe in the Southwestern style. Its mission was characteristic of the era: protect Hispano settlers from Ute raiding parties, protect Ute bands from settler encroachment, and enforce treaty arrangements that kept changing as the United States decided it wanted more of the valley and then more of the mountains. The soldiers were simultaneously peacekeepers, enforcers, and scouts in a territory where the legal ground shifted under everyone's feet every few years.
The Mouache and Capote Ute
The Mouache and Capote Ute were the bands whose territory included the San Luis Valley and the eastern Sangre de Cristo slope. Their seasonal movements through the valley had been part of the landscape for generations before the Hispano settlers arrived in 1851. The early decades of settlement were not a simple story of conflict: there were periods of trading, economic interdependence, and local cooperation alongside the raids and diplomatic crises that dominate the written record.
Kit Carson, 1866
Kit Carson arrived at Fort Garland in May 1866, 56 years old and already ill with what would prove to be a terminal aortic aneurysm. By 1866 he had been a trapper, a scout for Fremont, a rancher, an Indian agent, a Civil War officer, and, most controversially, the man who commanded the forced removal of the Navajo people in 1863 and 1864. The Long Walk removed between 8,000 and 10,000 Navajo people, who were marched hundreds of miles to Bosque Redondo in eastern New Mexico and held in terrible conditions for four years. Roughly 2,000 died.
The 1868 Ute Treaty
In September 1866, Carson persuaded Chief Ouray to bring his band to Fort Garland to negotiate. The negotiations that followed were the foundation for the 1868 Ute Treaty, which established a formal reservation covering roughly the western third of what would become Colorado. Carson died in May 1868, less than a year after leaving Fort Garland. He never saw the treaty finalized, nor saw how quickly it unraveled when silver and gold discoveries in the San Juans made the United States decide the Ute's guaranteed territory was inconveniently located over valuable ore deposits.
Buffalo Soldiers and the fort today
  • The 9th Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers) served rotations at Fort Garland in the early 1870s
  • Fort abandoned 1883 after the Ute removal made its peacekeeping mission obsolete
  • Colorado acquired the site in 1945; now a Colorado state museum
  • One of the better-preserved examples of a mid-19th century western Army post in the region. Worth an hour if you have it.

Wildlife
Sandhill Crane — The Oldest Bird in the Fossil Record

How old is the crane family?
The Gruidae, the crane family, are recognizable in fossil beds dating back 47 to 54 million years. The sandhill crane staging at Monte Vista is, in a meaningful biological sense, one of the oldest continuous success stories in vertebrate evolution. While most of what was alive in the Eocene is unrecognizable to us now, the crane has been doing exactly this, more or less, for longer than the Rocky Mountains have existed in their current form.
The Monte Vista numbers
  • Rocky Mountain population winters at Bosque del Apache, New Mexico, along the Rio Grande
  • San Luis Valley is their primary staging area for the Rocky Mountain leg of migration north
  • Peak migration (first week of March): 18,000 to 21,000 Greater Sandhill Cranes at the Monte Vista refuge and surrounding private land
  • Additionally 5,000 to 6,000 Lesser Sandhill Cranes pass through
  • Total peak: up to 27,000 birds, roughly 95 percent of the entire Rocky Mountain population in one valley
  • Breeding destination: Yellowstone Ecosystem, Idaho, Montana
Why they need this valley
The refuge floods wetland cells and managers mow grain fields to expose leftover harvest grain, creating food where little natural crane food exists in late winter. Without this management, the staging area would support a fraction of the birds. A crane arriving at Monte Vista after the New Mexico winter may be carrying minimal fat reserves. It needs weeks of intensive feeding on grain, insects, and invertebrates before it has the energy to continue north to breed.
The bird itself
  • Standing 4 feet tall, wingspan up to 7 feet, weighing 8 to 12 pounds
  • Bright red patch of bare skin on the crown that intensifies during breeding display
  • Gray plumage partly stained: cranes preen with iron-rich mud, painting themselves rusty brown in warmer months
  • Mate for life, or near enough that the distinction may not matter practically
  • Begin breeding at 3 to 5 years; regularly live into their 20s and 30s in the wild
The unison call
Thousands of cranes roosting in standing water overnight, their calls producing a sound described, not inaccurately, as something between a French horn and a dinosaur. The unison call, a coordinated duet that bonded pairs perform, involves the male giving two calls for every one the female gives, the timing so precise and practiced that paired birds can hold it together even in the chaos of a flock of thousands.
By late May
The peak staging is long past when you drive through in late May. Most of the Rocky Mountain cranes are already on northern breeding grounds. But a smaller resident population nests in the valley itself. If the season is right, you may see small family groups or individual birds in the fields along CO-17. A crane standing alone in a potato field at 7,600 feet, 150 miles from the nearest ocean, visible against the Sangre de Cristo backdrop. Watch for them.
🌿 Chapter 8: Life on the Alkali Flats
San Luis Valley Floor Ecology — Not a Desert, Exactly

The constraints
The San Luis Valley floor receives only six to eight inches of rain per year and sustains a plant community that would not look out of place in the Great Basin of Nevada. It is more precisely a high-altitude semi-arid grassland with severe constraints: alkaline and sometimes saline soils, low precipitation, intense UV radiation at 7,600 feet, frost possible in any month of the year, and groundwater chemistry that most plants cannot tolerate. The plants that live here are not survivors of a landscape that wants them gone. They are the right plants for this place.
Four-wing saltbush (Atriplex canescens)
The dominant shrub across the alkali flats. Its leaves push excess sodium out through the leaf tissue, allowing the plant to grow in soils that would kill most vegetation by osmotic stress. The four-wing designation comes from the winged seed capsules. You will see it along CO-17 and on the edges of the access road to Joyful Journey: low, mounding, salt-gray, with those papery seeds visible in season.
Greasewood (Sarcobatus vermiculatus)
Grows in the wettest, saltiest depressions where the shallow water table comes close to the surface. Darker green than saltbush, with small succulent-looking leaves. Where you see greasewood, the water table is relatively close and the soil is very salty. It is a botanical indicator for the wettest, most mineralized parts of the valley floor.
Rubber rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa)
The late-season bloomer. Lights up the valley floor in gold in late August and September when almost everything else has gone to seed. In late summer, its small yellow composite flowers are one of the primary late-season nectar sources for native bees, monarch butterflies on fall migration, and a range of other pollinators that have few other options after midsummer heat has dried most wildflowers.
Alkali sacaton (Sporobolus airoides)
The grass that grows in the wettest, saltiest drainages. A coarse, tussock-forming native grass that tolerates seasonal flooding with salt-laden water. Its seed heads form graceful plumes that blow in the valley wind. The dense communities of alkali sacaton in the valley's wet meadows provide cover and nesting habitat for ground-nesting birds and the invertebrates that form the base of the crane food chain.
The microenvironment at Joyful Journey
The geothermal discharge keeps the immediate spring area slightly warmer than the surrounding valley floor in winter. The mineral-rich artesian overflow creates a wetland margin supporting cattails, rushes, and water-tolerant sedges in the seep areas. Hot spring margins are microenvironments, small islands of different conditions in a landscape otherwise defined by cold and dry, harboring plants and insects you would not find 200 yards away on the open flat.

Blanca Peak — Tsisnaasjini', the Eastern Sacred Mountain

The geology
The rock of Blanca Peak is nearly 1.7 billion years old, the ancient Precambrian basement that the sedimentary layers sat on top of before the mountains existed. The Rio Grande Rift fault system has lifted the entire Sangre de Cristo block while the valley beside it dropped, exposing these ancient rocks at elevations where most of North America's basement is buried miles below the surface. The fault has displaced the same Precambrian rock by more than 20,000 feet vertically.
The sacred significance
The Navajo people, Diné, organize their world geographically around four sacred mountains, one at each cardinal direction, that define the boundaries of Dinétah, the traditional homeland. These mountains are not metaphors. They are specific physical places, identified by name and story, that establish where the Navajo world begins and ends and what it means to be within it. The eastern boundary mountain is Tsisnaasjini', which translates approximately as Dawn or White Shell Mountain. It is Blanca Peak.
The four sacred mountains
  • East: Tsisnaasjini' (Blanca Peak, CO) — dressed with white shell, fastened to the earth with lightning. Hogans face east toward this mountain; the first light of day enters the door aligned with its sacred direction.
  • South: Tsoodzil (Mount Taylor, NM) — associated with turquoise and summer rains
  • West: Dook'o'oosliid (San Francisco Peaks, AZ) — associated with abalone shell and autumn
  • North: Dibe Nitsaa (Hesperus Mountain, near Durango, CO) — associated with obsidian and winter
A mountain that crosses political boundaries
Blanca Peak has never been within the political boundaries of any Navajo reservation. The original reservation established in 1868, in the treaty that ended the Long Walk imprisonment covered in the Fort Garland chapter, was drawn well south and west of Blanca's position. The Navajo Nation has maintained a formal interest in ceremonial access, and the relationship has continued through federal land ownership changes and cross-state jurisdiction, because a sacred mountain does not become less sacred when a political boundary is drawn past it.
Still active
The Sangre de Cristo fault continues to move. Paleoseismic work on fault trench excavations shows surface-rupturing earthquakes in the last 10,000 years. The mountains are still rising, driven by the same extension that opened the valley. The geology and the sacred significance are, in a sense, the same observation made in different languages: this is a place where the forces that shaped the world are still working, still visible, still present.

1923
The San Luis Valley in 1923 — Three Agricultural Systems at Once

The 1923 connection to the show
Taylor Sheridan's 1923 is set in Montana's Paradise Valley, where the Dutton family is fighting to hold a cattle ranch through drought, disease, and the encroachments of a changing West. In 1923, the world that family represents, the world of the open range and the horse-powered ranch, is already ending. The San Luis Valley in 1923 was that same transition, more compressed and more complicated, because the people who lived here had already been through several rounds of dispossession and adaptation before the early automobile age arrived again.
Three phases in 70 years
  • Phase 1: Hispano acequia phase — The hand-dug ditches and vara-strip farms around San Luis and the Culebra Creek settlements, running since 1851, still operating in 1923 under their traditional mayordomo structure. Four and five generations in, farming ground their great-grandparents had turned with wooden plows.
  • Phase 2: Artesian well boom — Starting in the late 1880s, thousands of artesian wells drilled across the valley. Fields too far from a creek to be acequia-irrigated could now be farmed. Potato production became the signature crop. Colorado potatoes were the state's most valuable agricultural crop by the 1920s, a significant share from this valley.
  • Phase 3: Anglo homesteader wave — Homestead Act settlers attempting dry farming on six to eight inches of annual rainfall. Most failed. The physical evidence was everywhere in 1923: abandoned homestead cabins, overgrown claim boundaries, fields gone back to saltbush and rabbitbrush.
The Japanese-American truck farming arrival
In the same decade that homesteaders were abandoning their claims, Japanese-American families from California and Colorado's Front Range established themselves in the valley introducing intensive truck farming: vegetables grown for sale in town markets and railroad-car shipment, requiring the kind of daily labor and technical skill the short growing season demanded. This community would later be forced into internment camps during World War II, a loss to the valley's agricultural knowledge that was not fully recovered.
The horse was still the engine
In 1923, the horse was still the engine of valley farming. A team of Percherons pulling a potato harvester down a San Luis Valley field in October 1923 would have been utterly familiar to Jacob Dutton. The water is still here. The acequia still flows. The Sangres are in exactly the same position they were in 1923. Some of the families are too.

San Luis Valley — What Requires a Return Trip

🏜 Great Sand Dunes National Park
About 30 miles east of Moffat on CO-150, 40 minutes from Joyful Journey. High Dune: 699 feet of elevation gain on sand, 2 to 4 hours round-trip. Go early; dune surface reaches 140 degrees Fahrenheit by afternoon. Star Dune (750 feet) requires a full day and a longer approach across the dunefield. Medano Creek runs April through early July with surge flow. Mosca Pass Trail: 3.5 miles one-way, 1,550 feet gain, exceptional dunefield views from upper switchbacks. Zapata Falls: short hike to a 30-foot waterfall in a slot canyon, 50 yards through cold creek water. Under-visited and worth it.
🦐 Come Back in March for the Cranes
The Monte Vista Crane Festival runs the first weekend of March annually. Small, manageable crowds, extraordinary crane numbers. Book ahead; local lodging in Monte Vista and Alamosa fills for that weekend. Arrive at the Refuge at sunrise and find a field margin where a few thousand birds are lifting off in the morning light.
♨️ Joyful Journey Return Tips
Weekday visits are significantly quieter than weekends, especially in summer. Yurts and glamping accommodations available for two-night stays with evening and morning soaks when pools are nearly empty and Sangre de Cristo dawn light is doing what it does. Clothing-optional hours designated; check their website for current schedule.
🍶 True Grits Steakhouse
Old-school western steakhouse in downtown Alamosa, local institution. A reliable choice for something substantial after a day of hot spring soaking.
🍲 Calvillo's Mexican Restaurant
Alamosa. Good regional New Mexico-influenced cooking. Has been feeding the community for decades.
🍺 San Luis Valley Brewing Company
Monte Vista. The area's craft beer anchor, good food alongside Colorado-brewed beers in a solid downtown space.
🏛️ San Luis — The Oldest Town in Colorado
30 miles south of Alamosa. The Covered Wagon Restaurant is a local institution. The Stations of the Cross Shrine, a series of life-sized bronze figures set in the hillside above the valley, is worth the walk. The church in the central plaza has been in continuous operation since 1862. The San Luis People's Ditch, dug in 1852, is still flowing.
🏛️ Fort Garland Museum
Southeastern San Luis Valley at the foot of La Veta Pass. Small and serious. Worth an hour. One of the better-preserved mid-19th century western Army posts in the region. The adobe buildings still stand.
The Valley Rewards Time

What you are doing today, the drive-through soaking visit, barely scratches what is here. A dedicated return, built around Great Sand Dunes and the March crane festival, with a night or two at Joyful Journey, a morning at Fort Garland, and a proper meal in San Luis, would be a very good few days in southern Colorado. The valley is not going anywhere. The acequia is still flowing. The cranes will be back in March. So will you, if you are paying attention.
