How a Hot Spring Works

What you're looking at
Rain and snowmelt seep into fractures in the bedrock and descend miles underground. The Earth heats it at roughly 25–30Β°C per kilometer of depth. Hot water is less dense than cold water, so it rises back up along fault lines and emerges as a hot spring. It's a giant convection loop driven by the heat of the planet itself.
Why it matters here
The Sawatch fault system running through Glenwood Springs provides the fracture network this system needs. Colorado has 93 known geothermal areas β€” more than almost any other state β€” because the Rocky Mountain uplift created thousands of miles of fault plumbing for water to circulate through.

What you're looking at
This formation is why Glenwood Springs has hot springs at all. The Leadville Limestone is both permeable and soluble β€” it dissolves in mildly acidic rainwater, creating caves, fractures, and channels. These dissolved passages act as underground highways routing thermal water from deep circulation zones to surface springs. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park above town is carved into this same rock.
Why it matters here
The Leadville Limestone aquifer connects the geothermal heat source deep underground to the springs at river level. Water emerges at the surface at 111–124Β°F. The Big Spring alone flows at 143 liters per second β€” 2,263 gallons per minute of hot mineral water, continuously, for millennia.
The Paradox Formation β€” Where the Minerals Come From

What you're looking at
As geothermal water circulates deep through the Paradox Formation, it dissolves enormous quantities of salt and minerals. The springs at Glenwood discharge approximately 120 cubic yards of dissolved salt into the Colorado River every single day. The water at Graves Spring reaches 21,500 mg/L total dissolved solids β€” more than half as salty as the ocean.
Why it matters here
This is the source of the 14+ minerals in Iron Mountain's pools: iron, sulfate, chloride, sodium, calcium, magnesium, lithium. The iron that gives Iron Mountain its name β€” and its reddish tinge β€” comes from deep circulation through Paleozoic iron-bearing formations. On contact with air, dissolved ferrous iron oxidizes to ferric iron, the same chemistry that turns sandstone orange across the Colorado Plateau.

Geology
Sits directly on the south bank of the Colorado River at the intersection of the Sawatch fault system. As the river carved deeper into the canyon over 3+ million years, the springs tracked its path downward β€” the spring locations are a record of river incision history. This is rare enough that the site is a National Natural Landmark. The water you're soaking in fell as snow approximately 20,000 years ago.
History
The Ute called these waters Yampah β€” "Big Medicine." Sheriff Bob Ware built the first formal bathhouse here in 1897. The facility operated under multiple names until it closed in 1966. Iron Mountain Hot Springs reopened on the historic site in 2015 after restoration.

What you're looking at
At the deepest, narrowest sections of Glenwood Canyon, the Colorado River has cut all the way to the ancient basement rock. These are gray-pink, coarse-grained rocks with swirling banding textures from metamorphism and dark dikes cutting through lighter material. When these crystals formed, the most complex life on Earth was single-celled.
Why it matters here
This is the foundation of North America β€” the same Precambrian basement visible at the Grand Canyon, but here you're driving past it at 65 mph. The canyon walls expose more than a third of Earth's entire history in a 12-mile drive.
The Great Unconformity

What you're looking at
Look for where smooth, regular horizontal sedimentary layers seem pasted directly onto crumpled, contorted ancient rock below. That contact surface is 1.2 billion years of missing history β€” rock that was deposited, then stripped by erosion before the Cambrian sea advanced and laid down new sediment on top. You're looking at a gap longer than all animal life on Earth.
Why it matters here
The same unconformity is famous at the Grand Canyon, but here you can see it from the road at 5,800 ft elevation while listening to an audio guide. The Cambrian sandstone just above it β€” the Sawatch Sandstone β€” is ancient beach sand from the first advance of a warm sea across this surface 500 million years ago.

What you're looking at
Just east of Glenwood Canyon along I-70, Dotsero Crater is a 750-meter-wide, 76-meter-deep explosion crater. The basaltic lava flow it produced buried 168 acres of the Eagle River floodplain. Mammoths were already extinct; humans were present. Look for rough, dark, clinkery basalt near the road β€” it looks completely different from the surrounding sedimentary canyon walls.
Why it matters here
The USGS classifies Dotsero as a "moderate threat" hazard. A massive landslide triggered by an earlier event dammed the Colorado River here, creating a lake. Into that lake settled volcanic ash from the Dotsero eruption β€” and that ash-rich clay layer, the "Gray Layer," now sits under I-70 and is responsible for multiple highway closures when it gets wet.
Building I-70 Through the Canyon

The last 12-mile section of the entire US Interstate Highway System to be completed was Glenwood Canyon β€” finished in 1992 after 12 years of construction and $490 million. The canyon is so narrow that the two-direction roadway couldn't fit side by side, so one direction is elevated on viaducts above the other.

The canyon has been closed multiple times for rockfall and in 2021 was buried under feet of mud from debris flows after the Grizzly Creek wildfire. The walls shed rocks ranging from softball to Volkswagen-Beetle size regularly.

Bark contains salicylates related to salicin in willow β€” used for pain, fever, and inflammation. The sticky resin on spring buds has antimicrobial properties.

The trees are in full new-growth leaf β€” that intense, translucent yellow-green that shifts to darker green through summer. The seed cotton hasn't released yet; in 2–4 weeks the white fluff will be flying everywhere. Each seed is attached to a silky fiber that keeps it airborne for miles.
How to identify
  • Long, narrow lance-shaped leaves β€” much longer than wide (unlike plains cottonwood's broader leaf)
  • Yellow-green catkins in spring appear before or with leaves
  • Forms dense stands along the river's alluvial banks β€” always near water
Ecology
Large groves may be a single genetic individual spreading via root sprouts, which creates the uniform appearance of many cottonwood stands. Their roots are enormously effective at stabilizing streambanks.

Bark contains salicin β€” the natural precursor to aspirin. The Ute people used willow bark medicinally for thousands of years. Salicin converts to salicylic acid in the body, the same active compound as aspirin. Bayer synthesized the first commercial aspirin in 1897; this is the plant that made that possible.
How to identify
  • Long, narrow lance-shaped leaves (narrowleaf willow) along the Colorado River at this elevation
  • Fuzzy catkins (seed/flower clusters) appear before or with leaves in spring
  • Always found near water β€” streambanks, wet areas, riverbanks

Acorns are edible after leaching β€” raw acorns contain bitter tannins that must be removed by soaking in multiple changes of water for 24–48 hours. After leaching, acorn meal has been a staple food for cultures worldwide. The Ute people processed Gambel oak acorns as an important food source.
How to identify
  • Deeply lobed leaves with rounded (not pointed) lobe tips β€” the rounded lobes distinguish it from eastern oaks
  • Dense shrubby thickets on rocky canyon slopes at 5,000–8,000 ft
  • In late May: in active bloom β€” tiny wind-pollinated flowers, new growth bright green
Why it dominates the canyon slopes
Gambel oak reproduces by seed AND by clonal root systems β€” entire hillsides can regenerate from a single root network after wildfire. This makes it the ecological foundation of the foothills zone. Mule deer shelter in its thickets; black bears gorge on its acorns in fall.

How to identify (to avoid)
  • White umbrella flower clusters, 2–6 ft tall, always near water or in wet areas
  • If root is accidentally exposed: chambered interior with partitions and yellowish sap β€” unique to this species and a fatal-mistake signal
  • Leaf veins run to the notches between teeth (not to the tips) β€” an unusual botanical feature

Rocky canyon walls along I-70 east of Glenwood Springs. Look for them on cliff faces that seem impossibly steep β€” that's exactly where they prefer to be.

Daytime β€” diurnal. Most visible in morning light on south-facing canyon walls.
Interesting
Their hooves have a hard outer edge for traction and a soft inner pad for grip β€” engineered for moving at speed on near-vertical rock. In late May ewes are lambing on ledges that seem impossible. The lambs are walking within hours of birth. In late May look for ewes accompanied by small, spindly lambs on precarious-looking ledges.

Where to spot
Colorado River through Glenwood Canyon and Glenwood Springs. Look for platform nests on power poles and bridge structures. Watch for hovering 30–60 feet above the river before plunging.

Active
Daytime active hunter. In late May, actively nesting β€” eggs laid or actively incubating.
Interesting
The only North American raptor that dives completely underwater to catch fish. Feet have reversible outer toes and rough, spiny pads for gripping slippery fish. They take trout regularly from the Colorado River. Watch for the diagnostic hover-then-plunge hunting sequence.

Gambel oak thickets on canyon slopes; occasionally in town at dawn/dusk. Spring is prime time β€” they're hungry after winter dormancy and actively foraging.

Interesting
Black bears in Colorado are often brown, cinnamon, or blonde β€” not always black. In late May they're recently out of dens and intensely hungry, foraging on spring grasses and insects before berries ripen in July. Their sense of smell is 7x stronger than a bloodhound's. Never leave food in vehicles in Glenwood Springs β€” the town has bear-proof trash regulations for good reason.

Gambel oak hillsides around Glenwood Springs; meadows along Highway 82 toward Carbondale at dawn and dusk. Common enough to see in town.

Interesting
Named for their large mule-like ears that move independently. In late May does are giving birth to spotted fawns β€” fawns found alone are NOT orphaned. The mother is nearby and returns to nurse several times a day. The spotted coat is camouflage, not a sign of distress.

Soaring on canyon updrafts and thermals above canyon rims along I-70. Watch for large dark birds using the rising air without flapping.

Interesting
Hunts by soaring on canyon updrafts and diving at speeds exceeding 150 mph. Entirely dark brown plumage with a golden sheen on the back of the head β€” visible in good light. Distinguished from bald eagles by the all-dark body (no white head or tail).

Where to spot
Fast-moving sections of the Roaring Fork River and Colorado River tributaries. Look for a plump, gray, wren-like bird bobbing up and down on a rock in turbulent water.
Interesting
The only truly aquatic songbird in North America. It walks underwater on stream bottoms to catch invertebrates, can swim, and dips repeatedly up and down. It has an extra eyelid (nictitating membrane) and can close its nostrils. It sings even through Colorado winters β€” one of the cheerful surprises of cold mountain streams.

Millennia before 1881
The Ute People and Yampah Springs

The Ute people β€” specifically the Parianuche band, the "elk people" β€” had been using the Glenwood Springs hot springs for centuries before any European arrived in Colorado. They called the springs Yampah, meaning "Big Medicine." Warriors soaked here after battles. The sick were brought to the vapor caves. The springs were not recreational amenity; they were medicine, ritual, and sacred space.
Chief Ouray negotiated treaty after treaty through the 1860s and 1870s as settler pressure increased. By 1874 he accepted a treaty surrendering four million acres for compensation that was never delivered. The Meeker Massacre of 1879 β€” triggered when Indian Agent Nathan Meeker tried to plow under the Utes' horse pasture and force them into farming β€” provided the political justification settlers had been waiting for. In August 1881, the Army force-marched the Uncompahgre Ute band 225 miles to a Utah reservation. The town of Glenwood Springs was incorporated four years later, in 1885. The hot springs they had used for millennia became the foundation of a resort economy within a generation.

World's Largest Hot Springs Pool β€” Walter Devereux's Vision

Walter Devereux, an engineer and silver baron, arrived in 1886 and had an audacious vision: build the largest hot springs pool in the world. Workers diverted the Colorado River to expose the original riverbed, excavated, and paved it in fire brick. The walls were built of Peachblow sandstone quarried near Basalt. The bathhouse featured 42 sunken Roman vapor baths in imported porcelain β€” 30 for men, 12 for women β€” plus parlors, a gymnasium, and a physician's office. Cost: $100,000 (roughly $3 million today).
The pool opened July 4, 1888. Measuring 615 feet by 75 feet β€” longer than two football fields β€” it holds one million gallons and is fed by the Yampah Spring at over 2,000 gallons per minute. It is still the world record for largest hot springs pool. Within a decade, Glenwood Hot Springs was a destination for wealthy Victorians from across the country.

Hotel Colorado β€” "The Medici Palace of the West"

Flush with pool success, Devereux commissioned Hotel Colorado in 1891, completed 1893. Designed by New York architects, modeled on the Villa de Medici in Rome. Construction cost $850,000 β€” over $23 million today. The grand opening featured an orchestra, fireworks, and roughly 300 wealthy families. A 25-foot waterfall cascaded in the central lounge; an electrically-lit outdoor fountain shot waterspouts hundreds of feet into the air.
President Theodore Roosevelt used the hotel as a temporary White House in 1905, hosting a three-week hunting trip and addressing crowds from the balcony. President Taft followed in 1909. "Unsinkable" Molly Brown β€” the Titanic survivor β€” was a regular guest. During Prohibition, the notorious Diamond Jack Alterie used the hotel as his headquarters and reportedly hosted Al Capone in clandestine speakeasies. In 1943, the U.S. Navy leased the entire building as a convalescent hospital for veterans.

Doc Holliday β€” His Last 57 Days

John Henry "Doc" Holliday was 35 when he arrived in Glenwood Springs in summer 1887. Born in Georgia and trained as a dentist (graduated 1872), he had contracted tuberculosis in Atlanta. The disease drove him west to drier climates and eventually to gambling. By the time he arrived here, he had survived the gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone (1881) alongside Wyatt Earp, a federal manhunt, and years of frontier drifting through Dodge City, Denver, and Leadville. Wyatt Earp called him "the deadliest man with a six gun I ever knew."
Holliday came for the hot springs and vapor caves, then being promoted as tuberculosis cures. He checked into the Hotel Glenwood Springs and worked briefly as a dentist while gambling. He spent 57 days here. On the morning of November 8, 1887, he asked for a glass of whiskey, drank it, looked down at his bare feet β€” he had always expected to die in a gunfight, boots on β€” and reportedly said "This is funny." Then he died at 36. He is buried in Linwood Cemetery. The exact grave location is uncertain β€” which, some say, is how he would have wanted it.
Naturally formed over millions of years
Yampah Vapor Caves β€” North America's Only Natural Vapor Caves

The Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves at 709 E. 6th Street contain the only naturally occurring vapor caves in North America. They are not spa grottos; they are actual underground chambers carved by geothermal processes through the Leadville Limestone. Inside: approximately 110–113Β°F with 100% relative humidity. Three chambers connected by concrete-reinforced tunnel with marble benches.
Formation mechanism: a "mixing zone cave" where descending meteoric water and ascending geothermal water combine. Both carry dissolved COβ‚‚, forming carbonic acid β€” which dissolves the Leadville Limestone far more aggressively than either water source alone. The hot spring water flowing through the cave floors at 125Β°F contains 34 identified minerals including sodium (6,600 mg/L), chloride (9,000 mg/L), lithium, and boron.
Ute warriors came here to treat wounds and to pray. The Southern Ute Tribal Historic Preservation Officer has described the caves as analogous to their sweat lodges, "going back into Mother Earth." The Arapaho and Cheyenne also fought the Ute for access to these springs β€” a water source this valuable was worth fighting over in a pre-pharmaceutical world. At 5,756 feet, atmospheric pressure is approximately 83% of sea-level pressure. Each breath contains about 17% less oxygen β€” not because the fraction changes (it's still 20.9% everywhere), but because total air molecules per breath decreases with altitude. This is moderate altitude. Most healthy people adapt well, but the body notices.
Immediate responses (hours 1–12)
  • Deeper breathing: Respiratory center detects lower blood Oβ‚‚ and increases breath depth. You may notice breathing harder than expected during light exertion.
  • Heart rate up 5–15 bpm: Cardiovascular system compensates by increasing cardiac output.

Sleep

National Natural Landmark
Designated June 2011 by the National Park Service as "an outstanding example of a lake formed by travertine deposition around the shoreline." One of only two comparable systems in the US β€” the other is Yellowstone's terrace system.
How the lake formed
Two events created this: First, a geological fault caused a section of the valley floor to drop, leaving the lake's future basin hanging above the main canyon. Second β€” and this is the extraordinary part β€” Dead Horse Creek above has been building the lake's retaining wall for thousands of years. The creek water is supersaturated with dissolved calcium carbonate (limestone). When it flows over the lake's edge and contacts air, it loses COβ‚‚. That COβ‚‚ loss drops its ability to hold calcium carbonate in solution, so the calcium carbonate precipitates out as a dense stone called travertine. Layer by layer, the travertine rim has built up into the natural dam that now holds the lake in the air. It's still building. The lake is still growing.
Why the water is that color
Two mechanisms produce the turquoise: First, extremely fine suspended particles of calcium carbonate scatter light preferentially at blue wavelengths β€” the same physics that makes glacial lakes blue. Second, the dissolved mineral content of the water gives it optical density that deepens the blue tones. You can see the bottom 10–15 feet down. The color is real; it always looks photoshopped.
The fragility
The travertine is delicate enough that the oils from human skin can destroy it. Swimming is permanently banned. The boardwalk at the lake exists specifically to prevent foot contact with the formations. Those logs extending into the lake have had travertine building up on them for decades β€” touching them accelerates their destruction.
Spouting Rock β€” Water Through Solid Rock

What you're seeing
A short detour (10–15 min) above the lake leads to a powerful waterfall emerging directly from a hole in the limestone cliff face β€” not flowing over the top of the cliff, but shooting horizontally out of solid rock.
How it works
Dead Horse Creek, flowing above, percolates through fractures and joints in the Leadville Limestone. When the descending water hits an impermeable layer, it can no longer go down and is redirected horizontally, following dissolution channels through the rock until it finds an exit: the cliff face at Spouting Rock. The limestone has essentially been plumbing itself β€” water dissolving fractures wider over thousands of years, creating its own subsurface pipe system. What looks like geology doing magic is the Leadville Limestone doing exactly what it always does: routing water through its own body. The same process carved the Vapor Caves in town and Glenwood Caverns on the mountain above.

The curtains of bright green, fan-shaped leaflets draping from the wet cliff faces and travertine walls are maidenhair fern β€” one of the most distinctive plants at Hanging Lake and one of the rarest plants in the canyon country at this elevation.
Why it's rare here
Maidenhair fern requires continuously moist conditions β€” the kind found only at spring seeps, waterfall spray zones, and perpetually wet cliff faces. In Colorado's dry mountain climate, those conditions exist in only a handful of microhabitats. Hanging Lake's travertine seeps and waterfall spray create exactly the right environment: wet limestone, constant humidity, calcium-rich water. The USGS documents this species as a defining plant of "hanging garden" communities on the Colorado Plateau, growing on "the back and face walls" of seep environments.
What hanging gardens are
The curtains of plant life on the wet cliff faces here are a specific ecological community called hanging gardens β€” moisture-dependent plants colonizing cliff faces and canyon walls where water seeps from the rock. They are biological islands: surrounded by dry, rocky habitat on all sides but maintaining a perpetually moist microenvironment. The Hanging Lake hanging gardens also host Sullivantia (Sullivantia hapemanii var. pupusii), a globally imperiled Colorado endemic ranked G3T3 by NatureServe β€” the largest known population in the Southern Rocky Mountain Region grows here.
How to recognize maidenhair fern
  • Delicate, fan-shaped leaflets, each about fingernail-sized, bright translucent green
  • On extremely thin, wiry, near-black stems β€” the contrast between dark stem and bright leaflet is striking
  • Grows in drooping curtains from wet rock faces β€” not in soil
  • When sunlight hits it on a wet travertine wall, it glows

Where to look
Dead Horse Creek β€” the creek you've been hiking alongside the entire trail. The Colorado Birding Trail documents American Dippers as residents "in the wet spray and near the falls" at Hanging Lake. Look for a small, plump, uniformly slate-gray bird, robin-sized, standing on a rock in the rushing water and rapidly dipping its entire body up and down. Then watch it walk off the rock into the creek.
What it's doing
North America's only truly aquatic songbird. It forages by walking along the stream bottom on submerged rocks, picking up aquatic insects, larvae, and small fish from under stones and woody debris. A typical dive lasts 5–15 seconds. It walks against the current and grips submerged rocks to stay in place.
How it survives underwater
  • Transparent third eyelid (nictitating membrane) for underwater vision
  • Nostrils that seal shut when submerged
  • Unusually high hemoglobin levels β€” more oxygen per breath than most birds
  • Dense, waterproof feathering with an oversized preen gland secreting waterproofing oil
  • Short, strong wings used for swimming as well as flight
The bobbing
The constant up-down dip is involuntary-seeming and continuous β€” the bird does it even when standing still. It may improve vision into the water, or serve as communication in the noisy stream environment where calls are hard to hear. Dippers sing year-round, even through Colorado winters. Their song from a snowy creek bank in January is one of the finest surprises in mountain hiking.
In May
Adults are actively nesting. Dipper nests are dome-shaped constructions of moss built into cliff faces, under bridges, or behind waterfalls β€” the spray zone is preferred, which keeps nests moist and somewhat inaccessible to predators. If you see a dipper carrying food, a nest is nearby.

  • Distance: approximately 2.4 miles round trip (1.2 miles each way)

The permit system launched in 2019 after overcrowding began destroying travertine formations that took thousands of years to form.
